Welcome to IWETHEY!

New What about true co-location?
I found [link|http://www.johncompanies.com/collocation/|this link] from Kuro5hin and was intrigued enough to follow it up. The downside is that you would have to learn (or somehow borrow knowledge) to manage a FreeBSD server. You'd also lose the Keenspot fora; though I can't see why we couldn't just add one another one to phpIWETHEY for you (a bit like Darkwind).

New Tell me more of this "co-location"
Based on what I read it sounds as if they "give" you a machine to put stuff on, and you're responsible for all the software that goes on it. They handle technical problems, but I'd have to teach myself to use a web server and manage email servers and handle firewalls and security and all that junk. Yes?

It would certainly be cheap, but I have no idea how long it would take me to learn all that stuff. Not that I couldn't, but I imagine it would be somewhat painful. :)

I'll have to think on that one.

New That sounds about it.
If I were doing a web comic like HelpDesk, I would jump at this colo offer. But then I know how to manage my own Internet server. :-) Perhaps some of us IWETHEYers could give you a hand.

New Any BSD progs out there
that make running servers easy for newbies? Heh. Heh heh. *breaks out into uncontrollable peals of laughter.*

Sorry. Had to ask. :)

New Hm; does the CoLo run Debian GNU/BSD? Then Peter could go...
..."apt-get install <Whater Admin Package>" a few tens of times, and you'd be all set!

Unfortunately (as you, astute reader that you are, have already noticed) my use of the conjunctive above indicates that such a thing doesn't exist. (AFAIK.) (Yet.)

Of course, who am I to point fingers? I'm in the "Information Technology" business, prima facia evidence that there's bats in the bell tower.

New well, I suppose my other option is
to read a book. *sigh* :)

New Use the source, Luke.
I'm sure it would have a compiler on it. Compiling Apache is AFAIK not hard.

Wade.

New yeah, but after I compiled it
I would have no clue how to use it... unless the source also comes with extensive documentation that I will be able to understand.

New Well, see what you think.

Don't mistake me: I can entirely understand how you might find this Too Hard. So long as you weren't needing to try this in the next month, I should be able to help.
