The whole debate of gas cars vs electric is silly.

There is 2 kinds of driving - metro driving (to/from work, shopping, etc.) and highway driving. (We even measure gas mileage different for these).

So doesn't it make sense to further separate the two?

Electric cars are fine for most city driving. Better range would help but most people go less than 40 miles in a day metro (iirc). Batteries can handle that (although it would be better with a hybrid).

Highway driving is the problem. But if we offered a way to power the cars on the highway - similar to an electric train....we could drive without ever stopping.

Next step is to add a guidance system so that you don't even have to steer when you're on the highway. You'd have to convert on/off ramps so that people can connect/disconnect to the system and convert back to metro driving.

Then, if you want to have fun...consider a Tractor-Trailer truck in the above scenerio. (Yes, they're already talking about hybrid Tractor-Trailer trucks)
