Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Seems my iMac can accommodate an extra 2GB over 'specs'
== beyond its alleged 4 GB limit. Have to find the the specific link describing why you can use all of 6 GB but not 8 (via doubling-up some 1s --> 2s.)
Unclear if Any '4' could be used on this model and, apparently OS X gets all wonky at 8 GB on my mid-08, but 6 no es una problema. Hmmm.. Why IS that?
Obsolescence-by-Steve-design or just, inattention at outset == Knowing full well that memory board-densities Always rise?

*Similar link: http://eshop.macsale...ing/5300DDR2S6GP/

At ~ $120 to do swap, but for 50% more memory ... am pondering. And maybe their note re trade-ins!? can ameliorate sticker-shock.
I too habitually keep n tabs open, so more time before s w a p happens would be a Good thing.
(Or ... I could clean up may act by actual sane bookmark organization. After all these years. Fat chance, that.)

Maybe, similarly you also can over-clock / memory- ize on your teensy Server?

* Ed: except: mine is 800 MHz !='667', as in this kit for an '07 model ... gotta find link elsewhere re conversion of my 'iMac8,1' and its exact ID (via the sticker on bottom of pedestal). Details.. matter.

So then, here's the source of the wonkiness comment, re my 2.66 GHz model:

{sigh} 4 x '4x' would be Sixteen, but irrelevant. Seems I'd need also a 2x chip via their recipe, disposing of 4 x '1's. Bummer.
Maybe your gadget is more extra-expandable (?)

New Dunno.
There are so many things going on with these boxes these days (memory mapping video RAM and such, I think), I have no idea why 6 GB is OK by 8 GB isn't on yours. Earlier versions of the Mini had that issue as well - http://discussions.a...=2571098&tstart=0 .

The Mini only has 2 sockets, so that's it (even if it took 8 GB modules that's way too expensive).

Older memory is often more expensive than newer stuff. In my quick browsing, I didn't see anything cheaper than what you found for your iMac. While looking around I found a thread about lots of users having freezing issues. I hope that doesn't bite you - apparently it was a video driver issue. http://discussions.a...tart=300&tstart=0

Be careful! Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Re: Dunno.
Some of those replies show a difference in brands, apparently for identical spec chips -- where one person swapped his MB and MM boards and both worked.

Turns out that my iMac has 2 x 2 GB, also just 2 slots..
Will likely settle for the 6 for now anyway; by time that extra-50% goodness wears off, the next 4 GB + trade-in creds will be a bargain.
Paying a tad more at iFixit is OK because that's how they pay for their superb How-tos and they guarantee at least the 6 GB kit.
(If the problem on iMac is also firmware, mayhap that too will happen by the time I need it.)
Ditto for you if MM problem is firmware, etc.

Thanks for the sleuthing.

New iMac @ 6 GB, no sweat so far.. Love It.
New Woot. Success is good!
New Same with my MBP
my late 2008 MBP had a 4 GB limit, but likewise supports up to 6 GB.

At some point a firmware update was released that bumped that to a full 8 GB. I've not applied it as I only have 4 GB installed in mine and haven't seen the need to up it.

New That inventive Czech seems to have resolved firmware
as sole problem re. MBP; I note that one replier asked re iMac but the OWC thread didn't digress there.. maybe part of OWC's not giving hints before kits are in stock.
Thanks for link -- maybe Apple will throw an iMac firmware rev. too, in some next update (and not Tell anyone?)

By the time I think I need the extra 2 GB -- 8 GB will be norm and the 4s should be bargains.
