New Anyone successfully scanning with Snow Leopard on Intel?
I've got a Canon LIDE80 that I'm trying to use with Snow Leopard Server on my MacMini Server. I've installed the driver from Canon's US website and the CanoScan Toolbox 4.1 software. It eventually found the scanner, but on trying to do anything it would immediately quit. I installed the Toolbox 5.0 software. No scanner ever shows up as being connected. No scanner has ever been visible in ImageCapture. No scanner is ever found with Preview.

I've tried the VueScan demo. It knows the scanner is attached, but it can't find an Intel driver. Some people have reported success on G5 machines, but problems on Intel - http://discussions.a...messageID=7413903

Any tips you OS X gurus can offer?

Thanks.

[edit:] The LIDE80 drivers rely on Classic. That's why they won't work on SL Intel. No joy so far on the G5. I'm trying the LIDE200 drivers (the 80 didn't work on the G5 running 10.5 either.)

Cheers,
Scott.
(Who may have to hold onto the G5 machine longer than expected...)

New why I keep my 10yo imac around, vuescan works on that
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 55 years. meep
New I use ImageCapture
never had to install anything for my old Epson 2480 to work.

I found this page at Apple that might help, it lists supported scanners

Mac OS X v10.6: Printer and scanner software
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
New +1 to this.
Our All in one (epson something) just works with Image Capture.

Every once in a while we have to shut off the scanner and reboot the iMac. Usually after a system update.

Other than that... it just works.
New Thanks.
I saw that. I guess the LIDE80 is too old.

I've got to check a few other things, though. It doesn't power cycle when the Macs are rebooted, unlike when it was hooked up to my Winders machine. It does show up in System Profiler, so it seems to know it's there.

<GooglieGoo>

Maybe the trick is to install the French driver - http://forums.macrum...read.php?t=503869 There are some other tips on the 2nd page.

:-/

I'll try again tonight.

Cheers,
Scott.
New This guy has step-by-step instructions to make it work

Looks like the 2 key issues are

1) It's not Intel code, so it needs Rosetta for PowerPC emulation. With Snow Leopard, Rosetta is now an optional install.

2) the installer skips a required file.
New Excellent. Thanks very much.
New VueScan has lots of tips too.

I still haven't had a chance to get the desk cleaned up enough to install the DVD drive... I'll report back on my success.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Scott.

New Time flies. Progress, but still not there.
I've got an external USB LiteOn DVD-RW drive hooked up to the Mini through an IOGear 7 port powered USB hub. It works fine.

I installed XCode, X11 and some other goodies for some future experiments from the Admin Tools Install CD.

But, there's no obvious way to install Rosetta. There are lots of pointers out there that indicate either: 1) You can install it from the Snow Leopard Install DVD, or 2) The OS will throw up a popup window and offer to download it if you have an application that needs it. Neither were happening for me - Rosetta isn't on the OS Install DVD in an obvious way.

Turns out, Snow Leopard Server is different.

Gotta use the Terminal. (Here's hoping that set of instructions still works...)

More later, it I get it to work...

Cheers,
Scott.
New Works with CanoScan Toolbox X 4.1.3.0
Yippee.

But, so far, ImageCapture and VueScan don't see the driver so they don't work with the Lide80.

It's not worth fighting with any more right now.

It looks like the Lide 110 is fully supported - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669#canon - and is only $50 from Amazon - so maybe I'll grab one of those or something similar if I get too annoyed with the Toolbox.

Thanks for the help!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Haven't worked with Server before
interesting that Rosetta is done differently.

Glad you can at least can get scans now.
