You could almost use barbed wire for it and it would work... When I worked for a small computer company, we had a 21,000 foot run that worked at 1.8Mbps.
It was near perfect for long runs... but the token passing sucked and the limit on the number of nodes per network... and then you'd have to have a "routing node" that had to have special IPXs to be compiled to support the routing... and it could only do that and was dedicated to that.
