New Real advice
If you must use Windows, the following is what I consider the minimum required for safety;

1. Install and use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.
http://www.mozilla.c...os=win&lang=en-US

2. install both of the following add-ons to Firefox
Adblock Plus-
https://addons.mozil...irefox/addon/1865
Noscript-
https://addons.mozil...firefox/addon/722

3. install Zone Alarm
http://www.zonealarm...larm-firewall.htm
(use the "Download Basic Firewall" download link

4. install AVG free anti-virus
http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe
(scroll down and use the "AVG Free 8.5 for Windows" link to install

5. Use web-based email - Hotmail etc. Never, ever, ever use Outlook.

There are more options but the above is, as I said, the minimum.

New One futher...
never surf directly...try and always be behind a router that is actively blocking the most troublesome ports.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New As Nilsson says..
He's got a point there
New Firewall router.
Yup. I don't know how it is today but a couple years ago if you set up a new Windows computer without a hardware firewall between you and the Internet the average time for infection was about half the time it took to download and install all the Windows patches and updates you needed to close the vulnerabilities.
New 4 to 12 minutes
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New I used to run an open relay for spam researh
I would take it down for a while (few days) then turn it back on. Fastest time was 2 minutes for spam to be relayed thru it. That was before botnets were popular
New Funny you should mention that.
When I installed "uno.gregfolkert.net" and another machine for Mike at the same time... there was another guy there that had *JUST* plugged in a new Windows 2003 server with all patches and Anti-Virus and Software Firewalls and other stuff installed.

Time from completing the boot cycle and logging in... to "complete pwnage" was about 50 seconds.

I watched it happen while the monitor was still attached to the machine, the people logged the console out and rebooted the machine and it was Pwned.

He unplugged the machine and took it back to completely rebuild it.
