New Your Choice.
Using Windows(1) on the Internet is like putting a super-reinforced titanium-framed Teflon coated screen door on a submarine.
(1) == Even with a "software firewall and virus protection"

I think we can probably drop the footnote, though...
New Re: Your Choice.
thanks for making a joke out of this

New You obviously don't quite understand...
Its no joke son. I was trying to get you to understand the severity of the issue. Someone thought it funny. Only because its VERY VERY TRUE.

Using Windows on the internet is a serious problem.

All the "bot-nets", "SPAMMING Networks", "Click Fraud bots" and serious compromises for things like huge CHD (Card Holder Data) related to PCI (Payment Card Industry), comes down to people using Windows for saving critical data on them and one stupid person browsing that one Internet location or opening that one auto-execute e-mail.

I won't use Windows in anything except a Virtual Machine, or for specific tasks for which its ONLY going to do that task period, No browsing or anything else at all.

And to really answer your "Need a firewall and Web security apps" question:

If you are using Windows, there honestly is NONE. None of them without HUGE AMOUNTS OF UPDATES, scanning, lock down and utter making using the machine a PITA, will work in any way shape or form with save you in the end.

Unless you don't go to "Joke sites" or "Porn Sites" or "Pseudo news sites" or things like but exactly as TMZ/Perez Hilton or other glam news sites...

Eventually you click on a site or get and e-mail that has something that your Web-Wall (new term here to include both Firewall and Virus/Security stuffs) will never see coming and may/will completely disable it or evade detection (or both) until its too late. Thereby losing all your credit card data and photos and the like.

So, if you don't know it, many of us understand the under belly of the Beast and don't particularly like it all that much. There are much better options out there than Windows. Use them.

New yup, as I told a client who was regularly infected
who fucking wouldnt let go of windows
isolate your internet machine and only use the browser on it. Nevr share files with your other work machines. Never let the other machines touch the internet.
New It changes every few months.
What is good now will be superceded in twelve months time by something else.

This is kind of the wrong forum to ask, actually, as the advice will tend strongly towards "Don't use Windows on the 'net", as you've seen. If you *must* keep a Windows desktop, the best device is a hardware firewall, and don't use IE or Outlook. This is almost idiotically simple, but it works very well.

If you can't use a hardware firewall, then Windows own firewall isn't too shabby. By which I mean it really is better than nothing. I can't give you any more specific advice than that, as my computing practices mean I do not need such a product.

Another approach is simply to be prepared to do a wipe-install cycle whenever things go pear-shaped.

Q:Is it proper to eat cheeseburgers with your fingers?
A:No, the fingers should be eaten separately.
New Real advice
If you must use Windows, the following is what I consider the minimum required for safety;

1. Install and use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.
http://www.mozilla.c...os=win&lang=en-US

2. install both of the following add-ons to Firefox
Adblock Plus-
https://addons.mozil...irefox/addon/1865
Noscript-
https://addons.mozil...firefox/addon/722

3. install Zone Alarm
http://www.zonealarm...larm-firewall.htm
(use the "Download Basic Firewall" download link

4. install AVG free anti-virus
http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe
(scroll down and use the "AVG Free 8.5 for Windows" link to install

5. Use web-based email - Hotmail etc. Never, ever, ever use Outlook.

There are more options but the above is, as I said, the minimum.

New One futher...
never surf directly...try and always be behind a router that is actively blocking the most troublesome ports.
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New As Nilsson says..
He's got a point there
New Firewall router.
Yup. I don't know how it is today but a couple years ago if you set up a new Windows computer without a hardware firewall between you and the Internet the average time for infection was about half the time it took to download and install all the Windows patches and updates you needed to close the vulnerabilities.
New 4 to 12 minutes
I will choose a path that's clear. I will choose freewill.
New I used to run an open relay for spam researh
I would take it down for a while (few days) then turn it back on. Fastest time was 2 minutes for spam to be relayed thru it. That was before botnets were popular
New Funny you should mention that.
When I installed "uno.gregfolkert.net" and another machine for Mike at the same time... there was another guy there that had *JUST* plugged in a new Windows 2003 server with all patches and Anti-Virus and Software Firewalls and other stuff installed.

Time from completing the boot cycle and logging in... to "complete pwnage" was about 50 seconds.

I watched it happen while the monitor was still attached to the machine, the people logged the console out and rebooted the machine and it was Pwned.

He unplugged the machine and took it back to completely rebuild it.
