New Stupid American language
What else counts as only correct in the US and confusing to non-native speakers? The way you write dates. Either day of the month or year first would make sense but you write the month first. As language is the basis of thought, it's a wonder you can plan anything.
Matthew Greet

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?
- Mark Renton, Trainspotting.
New Stupid, no. Eccentric, yes.
We all have our pet peeves about it but we deal with it.

My, but the Brits are in a snit these days.

Amy
New Oh where did we ever get that silly date format?
England it was.

England, though, is in the process of being digested by Europe, so they use European dates (and measures) over there now.

New But not unique.
[link|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_date|Wikipedia]:
The mm/dd/yy format is used in:

Canada (Although most official documents use the yyyy-mm-dd format, the m/d/yy format is also understood due to influences from the United States.)

Federated States of Micronesia

Palau

Philippines (formerly d/m/yy. May still be found in certain contexts)

United States (Although Independence Day is often referred to as "the Fourth of July.")
Middle-endian rules! :)

Nobody has a more sacred obligation to obey the law than those who make the law. -- Sophocles (496? - 406 BCE)
New It follows the spoken form.
July 1st, 2007 -> 07-01-2007

No mystery there. Not convenient from a computer standpoint, but logical enough when you look at where it came from. Not many people say "The first of July, 2007" or "2007 in July on the 1st".

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Well, the rest of us find your spoken form equally silly.
You may not say "The first of July, 2007", but as Alex' Wikipedia quote shows(*), you DO say it the sensible way around when it comes to the fourth.

You *could* just as well do that for the first, and all the other days of the year, too.

Or do you have any particular reason to *say* it your silly way around?

Naah, thought so.

(*): Which we knew before, of course, from all the BeepBash threads if nothing else.

New Sure, it's a funnel sort - -
Unless I'm going to say: "OK my next utterance will be about a date:"
- then spout 2007, 14th of [what month? what Month?!? ... the impatient listener says to self]
- of ... July!

I can say, Out of the Blue

"Oh, on July 7 let's ____" (There! it's That Month and.. the date. Year is implicit unless added, "'0x")
(If THIS month, "Oh, on the 7th yada.."
(Or would you prefer, proximo / ultimo? / Enclosed please find..)

Short, direct - minimal suspense, fewest syl-la'-bles.

HTH

You silly..
New Then skip the "of": "On 7 July..."
...need not be any more ungrammatical than the converse: It's just convention that declares "July 7" grammatically correct; start using "Oh, on 7 July let's ____", and then that becomes the convention and therefore "correct".

Plus, its endianism will make sense.

New Well, Anna Nicole is dead, and all, so...
(And these kiddie hussies, PaBritSey and their ilk, are just not the same thing -- freaking toddlers, for one thing, and zero fucking curves, for another -- so I really can't work up the least bit of care-about for any of them...) So what else is there I *should* care about?
