...which might be taken to be the point of the production; perhaps it's a subtle satire on the USA; perhaps a bit too subtle for the media critics.

New It's based on a book

called, I think, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter", which I see has been re-issued to coincide with the new series, complete with a new cover showing Michael C. Hall.
