New 'Dexter'
Showtime is presenting a peek at the complete first episode of their new series, 'Dexter':

(Use "Sneak Peek" for the password, without the quotes, US-only unfortunately).

This is an extremely disturbing show. The title character (played to chilling perfection by [link|http://imdb.com/name/nm0355910/|Michael C. Hall] is a police forensics technician who specializes in analyzing bloodstains. He's incredibly good at this, possibly due to his hobby as a serial killer. The other twist is that his prey is other serial killers.

Dexter is a textbook sociopath. Ordinary human interaction baffles him, but he's become good at faking it. The writing and acting in this episode is sharp and riveting.

Not to mention incredibly disturbing.

So, is Showtime trying to do another of their dark, off-kilter shows (like 'Dead Like Me' or 'Huff') or have sociopaths become a large enough demographic that they decided to program for them?

New Perhaps it is the acting-out of another cliche -
"..scraping the bottom of the barrel" ?

Sex sells and it's everywhere; but for a detuned-Gag-reflex culture run by MBAs, thus accustomed to brutalizing schlock - there's only one direction (that I can think of) that might still, reliably bring in the $$ -- go lower.

Surely this is what large-scale 'dis-integration' looks like / during?
Thanks! for the warning.

New But here's the thing
This is a top-notch production. The writing, acting, photography, direction, it's all very well done.

If this was some amateur snuff on YouTube or elsewhere, it wouldn't be nearly as disturbing.

Maybe that's the point.

Is the only difference between the 'good guy' and the 'bad guy' their choice of victims?

New Judging by some of the legislation being noised about
in your country right now, that is pretty close to being an official position. If one has been Following Things for the last five years, it pretty much is the official action, if not the position.

...which might be taken to be the point of the production; perhaps it's a subtle satire on the USA; perhaps a bit too subtle for the media critics.

New It's based on a book

called, I think, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter", which I see has been re-issued to coincide with the new series, complete with a new cover showing Michael C. Hall.
