New freedb.org falling apart
Just tried to figure out how to resolve a buggered entry in the freedb CD database and came across this:

[link|http://www.freedb.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=292|http://www.freedb.or...e=article&sid=292]

Now being sick of how things turned out lately and I am not being able to run the project with the people in freedb left, I will stop this project in the forseeable future.

There are some comments in German that a mirroring site may try to keep things going, but nothing definite there either. Looks like MusicBrainz is the last one standing then...
New Wonder if it was poisoned
I haven't even read the link you sent, but I remember one of the complaints against freedb a couple of years ago was the loads of crap data. There was much discussion of how to clean it and/or keep it clean. I wonder how much time/money it would take for the RIAA to poison that data beyond usefulness.

New Disagreement over the OSS status of the next version
They were working with an Aussie developer to come up with the next generation of the server. For some reason, the new developments were not (yet) open source. One of the current crew (and the owner of the domain) apparently got rather upset about that. The other two quit in response.

Not sure if RIAA would have any benefit in poisoning it. It's aimed at complete CDs so most likely thay would tick off the handful remaining CD buyers they have left. (Which of course doesn't mean its past them...)
