New Re: The next question is...
I don't have Monday off, but I can take it off. I'd like to spend some time Sunday at Bill's but I'm open to whatever.

No reason we can't do both Red Robin and Monk's if people want to head into Philly.

New I'm off Monday
Okay, I'm "off" every day, but I don't have to go to work on Monday.

And while Monk's is nice, didn't Bill offer to buy at Geno's? ;-)

"Chicago to my mind was the only place to be. ... I above all liked the city because it was filled with people all a-bustle, and the clatter of hooves and carriages, and with delivery wagons and drays and peddlers and the boom and clank of freight trains. And when those black clouds came sailing in from the west, pouring thunderstorms upon us so that you couldn't hear the cries or curses of humankind, I liked that best of all. Chicago could stand up to the worst God had to offer. I understood why it was built--a place for trade, of course, with railroads and ships and so on, but mostly to give all of us a magnitude of defiance that is not provided by one house on the plains. And the plains is where those storms come from." -- E.L. Doctorow

New Lots of other choices
The key here is the attraction.

To me, you people are the attaction.

Monks is a bit noisy and crowded. It has good beer. It had mediocre food.

So, if I cared more about the beer then you, I'd immediately say Monks.

But I don't. I'd rather go to a quieter place (which in turn means I won't be yelling), that has a decent sized area for us to gather, that also has decent food.

So, should we look further?
New You pick, it's your stomping grounds.
I would be happy anywhere with your conditions - quietish and good beer.

For that matter, the only reason we went in to Monk's last year was so Peter and Jo could walk there, as I recall. We could just as easily hang at Bill's if he doesn't care. Although I am partial to a nice freshly pulled pint.

New OK, I'll do a bit of research
Do we have any food preferences in the bunch?

I'll come up with a variety in bit to choose from.
I'd prefer good food combined w/ BYOB. I can get a 6 pack of Hoegarden for the price of a single beer at Monks.
New Ok, here's my 1st cut
All the ones I have listed here are near
my house, which is about 25 minutes from Beep's.

I'm only listing places I've been to (or would not mind
trying)

If someone else (Bill?) closer would like to list
some stuff closer to him, feel free.

Mandarin Chinese Buffet (BYOB, very good, buffet includes stuff
like Peking duck!)

Italian (Macaroni grill - chain, but I like)

Andreotti's Viennese Cafe
Been going there for years. Food is very good.
A bit small and expensive.

Mexican Food Factory

I love this place.
New I'll probably be there in time for dinner...
so I'd like to request not Japanese. I'm probably not going to be in the mood for Chinese either, but I'm never in the mood for Japanese.

There are vegetarians in the mix, so a steak house doesn't seem like a good idea.

I don't care what the price range is. Someone else might though.

Cheers,
Ben

New Probably be there in time?
You better be.

If you're not, then I don't get to eat!

Dinner time for this crowd is going to be around 8ish, based on people's arrival times.
New Well you know what the airplane schedule is
I think I'll make it. :-)

Cheers,
Ben

New Jeez
OK, I've been calling places, no one has the right beer for Greg if they have good food. And you don't like asian.

Then tell me what do DO like, so I can focus my search.
New I like pretty much everything else
And I don't dislike all Asian. Just Japanese, and I'll probably not be in the mood for Chinese. Though I will do Chinese if everyone else does.

But I love Thai. Indian. Mexican is OK.

What's wrong with the plan of separate restaurant and bar?

New I love Thai as well
Ok, people, start speaking up. Do I focus on Thai, and find a place that 'X' can fit, is a reasonable distance, and has good food? I need a good idea of how many X equates to.

There are several Thai places within 5 miles of my house. I've tried 4 of them. I liked them all. In the list above is Siri's, which is about 3 miles the Bridge to philly where we can followup on the high end beer reguests. Siri's focuses on the French aspect. But I'm not sure on size.

There's another one on the Cherry Hill / Marlton border, abdout 5 miles down rt 70, that I've gone to several times recently. I'd say would could gather a crowd there nicely. Crispy duck is very good. Something blossom, I'll track it down.

Bangcok City is around the corner from me as well. Geiw grob and Miew Grob are quite good, the glass rolls are wonders, and the pressed duck is very good. A bit smaller than the other 2, but I've seen them accomodate a decent crown with notice.

For Bionerd Thai offers vegetarian. For me, I get variety of sweet and spicy appetizers and then the crispy duck, followed by sweet desert.

Siri's has a liquor license, which means food more expensive, and no (or frowned upon) byob. The food itself might be a notch above the others, but at this level we are splitting hairs. The others are byob and have less "atmosphere".

Beep - you got any closer suggestions?
New Thai is good.
The only thing I don't want is "steak by the inch" or anywhere else that's mainly beef.

BYOB is fine, I guess, but as long as we go somewhere else afterwards where they pull pints of thick beer.
Regards,

-scott anderson

New No sushi!!
I will not be able to sit at the same table and watch you eat that stuff! Bleck. Otherwise, I really dont care. I'm not coming for the food or the booze (okay, well maybe the booze). I coming for the company. We could be in a dank little hole in the wall and I would be happy. Matter of fact, the less fancy, the better.
Whatever you pick will be fine with me.
Sometimes.
When a man is alone in his room...
he wears stretchy pants.
It's for fun.
New Don't worry
Ben's NO JAPANESE rules it out.

On the other hand, bman hates Thai.

So, I told him to offer alternatives. Publicly. No whining aloud allowed without making helpful suggestions.
New I care not where. Except one thing.
I can drive over anything.

Especially with 245HP and a realativly light car.

I only care that the place has a (or couple of) GREAT [Stout|Bitter|Sour] [Ale|Beer]

There-in lies my only requirement.

New Either BYOB or specialty bar
So, I say we settle on a decent meal first, then end up at a specialty bar.

But, I'll see if I can find someplace that has both.
New Either way my requirement would be fulfilled.

New I define Great as: Drinkable without making excuses.
I am open to just about anything.

But for one specific example: Bare-Knuckle Stout on tap.

One to stay away from: Guinness "premium" in a bottle or can. Makes shoe leather taste good. On tap is tolerable.

New Good looking beer.
I am sure the any of the Beers are good. When a brewer advertises "balance" for what they brew, typically the beer is good tasting, whatever it is.

I am sure I'll like it.

New That's too bad
I need to call more places.

Of the few I mamanged to get a hold of last night, the only place that had what I considered "non-standard" beer was Ponzios, ie: a diner.

Now, mind you, it's a decent diner. But it's still a diner. It's a fallback for me as far as food choices go.

I'll keep trying.
New Just find a place that has non-pisswater on tap besides...
the pisswater (budweiser, miller, etc American "what passes for Beer")

A good rich beer is all I really need. Sam Adams or Bare Knuckle Stout or other good beers.

No need to be locked out of good restaurants because of my drinking habits.

New Oh, Sam Adams is OK?
List a few more, then.
You need to keep in mind when I was calling places I simply got a list of brews, and if I did not recognise it I then asked you. But maybe recognizable is OK,so you really do have to give me a list of good beers so when I make the calls I'll know.
New Not for a pub.
Dinner, sure, but not for Serious Pubbing.
