New The mice that roared
They're ba-a-a-ack!

Notwithstanding previous pronouncements from our PAO that the Rodent Insurgency was in its "last throes," we appear to have a major incursion this month, with forward bases located this time somewhere in the very room from which I post these dispatches. Eight Thunderfucker Mark IV™ Jaws-o-Death™ traps have been laid out on sundry tributaries of the Ho Chi Mouse Trail this evening, and I hope to report slaughter and mayhem before long.

militantly,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New :-) Good luck comrade!
New I will now tell the story of the summer visit
My parents divorced when I was quite young. After a few years had passed, my sister and I were invited to spend the summer with my father, I was 9 and she was 7. At this time my dad was a bus driver for the city. I would go with him some mornings on his job just so I could spend more time with him. This required getting up at 4:00. A. freakin' M.

Did you catch that? 4 oclock in the damned morning.

Anyway, one morning while we where sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast my dad leans down to pet the little nasty-ass chihuahua my step-mom doted over. Only it's not the dog. A damned rat is sitting there as bold as you please. I learned more about cursing in the next five minutes than I had known about in my entire previous life.

My pop also impressed me with his speed. He was out of that chair, over to the corner by the door where he grabbed the baseball bat*, and was able to send that rat on to its maker all within about 7 seconds.

*A feature next to the door in most houses in that neighborhood.

New They are making a retreat from my place
Ever since my mouser-general went off to that great catnip laden paradise in the sky, the rodents around my place felt emboldened and brazenly gallivanting around my living room and kitchen. It was time for me to take charge. I didn't need to resort to the high tech Jaws 'O Death. I used the $.040 "stock" traps, but used peanut butter AND cheese. The peanut butter adds just the right adhesion to make the mouse pause just long enough to catch the full fury of the snapping wire. I went five for five - all with perfect neck snaps and just their heads under the bar. This is perhaps akin to tar and feathering the little bastards but effective (although perhaps tarring and feathering their corpses and displaying them along the walls would act as a deterrent).

A side note, the non-lethal traps suck. I set them for two weeks (both the little seesaw ones and the big expensive flip trap) and got nada. The bait was gone but no mice. When I did the peanut butter and cheese on the cheap old reliable traps... bada bing, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap.

Happy hunting!
Just a few thoughts,

Danno
New Fortunately we have no mice here.
Unfortunately that's because the rats ate them all.

Fortunately the rats are Ratus ratus not Ratus norvegicus which means they are fairly small. Unfortunately that means they're too large for mouse traps and too small for rat traps which makes snapping them iffy.

They do love the little green rat food pellets, but those don't work as advertised (the rats die, but they're supposed feel dehydrated and leave the building to find water) which can make things smelly for a while.

New We had one known rat incursion...
The house construction is largely lath-and-plaster, but at some point before we assumed ownership there were some questionable remodeling decisions made in the rear of the house (nothing against the Chinese in North America, you understand, but I have observed in the Bay Area that when they assume ownership of a restaurant—actual Chinese cuisine excluded here, of course—the quality of the fare goes steeply downhill, and when they get their hands on residential real estate they tend to undertake what the realtors here privately call "de-modeling"), and so there is a kitchen larder awkwardly positioned beneath some improvised stairs up to the attic, and the sheetrock that formerly constituted its rear wall was easily penetrated by the fangs of a small rat that did foully compromise sundry foodstuffs stored therein in the flimsier sorts of packaging. Ratus ratus was too light-fingered for conventional traps, but the so-called "Rat-Zapper"—hideously costly at $40; four AA batteries not included—electrocuted his sorry ass on the second evening it was deployed. The larder has since been rebuilt with thick plywood affixed to the sheetrock.

On the other hand, the body count in the present struggle is as yet distinctly unsatisfactory.

cordially,
Die Welt ist alles, was der Fall ist.
New the margeritas and BB gun method work? Or are they shy

New I had a Ratus ratus infestation under the pigeon coop.
It isn't a proper pigeon coop, just a kid's play shack built on a concrete slab. A bunch of rats started living in the walls and under the slab, boldly coming out just before sunset to eat pigeon food.

I went out and bought the high power scope equipped air rifle I had intended to get as an "early retirement plan" for squirrels. Rats are much smarter than squirrels and became quite cautious after 4 or 5 got lead poisoning. Then they wouldn't come out at all until after dark.

Given this they were very grateful for the pretty green rat food pellets I poured into the walls and holes and scarfed them up right smartly.

New But is giving margeritas to rats really a good idea?
You'd NEVER get rid of them!

New And I hope your BB gun has a light trigger pull
Those tiny little paws aren't all that strong.

New Yes it's a really a good idea . . .
. . provided you keep control of the BB gun. Those rats are going to be laid back and sluggish.
