New What's FIOS?
I'd tell Comcast to take a hike, except SBC/AT&T/WTFO has so badly horked the (external) wiring in my area that I can't get DSL, although my neighbor two houses down has had it for over five years now. Seems that when Illinois Bell (remember them?) wired the industrial park a half mile (!) away, they got lazy and rather than install new wiring, they simply ran a loop from a junction point down the block from me, and put on an analog amplifier to boost the signal. And of course, I am the second house downstream from that amplifier. Analog amp means no DSL for you!

"Driven to deliver" my ass!

It's (slowly) coming to our region, starting with the areas where people make lotsa money, natch. Of course, I live in a low income part of town...

So, the DSL router showed 256/256 for a day, then I saw some weird network crap happening, went to the status page and it showed 900/444 - higher than it had ever been before. I ran some tests, and sure enough, I'm getting around that throughput.

And I'm only paying for 256/256. :D
When somebody asks you to trade your freedoms for security, it isn't your security they're talking about.

Verizon FiOS Internet Service is a broadband service designed to provide Internet access with maximum connection speeds of up to 30 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream, depending on the service selected. FiOS is provided on our state-of-the-art fiber-optic network. The consumer packages include a standard suite of services including access to newsgroups, up to 9 Verizon.net email accounts, online services, and 10 MB of personal Web space. Optional services are also available for a fee.
Doesn't say what FiOS means, but I like the specks. I have verizon phone service, but this isn't available in my neighborhood.

oddly enough they screwed up the phone on the initial

New Re: What's FIOS?
Got it here. We went for the 5m/2m package. Only cost us about $5 more than what we had been paying for DSL.

So far, it's been pretty stable, except for the initial install problems. Seems that the guys who ran the fiber to the house managed to damage the drop during the install. 2 weeks later, someone had to come out and re-do it.

Other than that, it's been pretty stable and speeds are just about as advertised. Latest test run today at 2:15 pm says 4777/1733.
New Thanx for the review!
I think I get 5m down, but nowhere near that up. That could be useful for videoconferencing.
