The mac 9 os (remember I am new to this) is on its own partition and you need to use the 9.x virtual machine to access that partition. If she boots to 9.x as opposed to OSX then downloads the update it might work. (all this right out of my ass)'

You shouldn't run the OS 9 Software Update in Classic. For one thing, OS 9 expects to have direct HW access, which OS X, of course, doesn't allow.

Similarly, firmware updates also must be applied directly in OS 9.
