New Printer issue debugging?
I won't get a chance to look at this until tonight when I get home, but I ran into an issue today - when I tried to print out a document (tiff) it printed "wide" - pixels were spaced out, and it ran off the page to the right. Height was just fine. I'm running Ubuntu 5.10, using Automatix, with a Brother HL-5140 printer via USB. Tried opening the document in the Gimp, and when it printed, I started getting multiple pages of Postscript spew. Turned off the printer, cleared the print queue, turned it back on, tried printing, nothing came through.

I had to restart the computer for other reasons (kernel package upgrade) so I went ahead and restarted. At this point, the print queue shows as empty, but anything sent to the printer might as well be sent to /dev/null. Any suggestions on what to check? I'd like to learn something about how printing works, so deleting and readding the printer isn't the ideal solution.

Thanks,
Me

New Since Ubuntu uses CUPS
I guess the problem probably lies in the config of cups or the ppd or the gimp^H^H^H^Hgutenprint modules for you printer.

Take a gander @ localhost:631 and plink around there. You might just find out you printer is "stopped".

Also, I recnetly had to fight with my Seiko-Epson-Ekowa RX600, usblp was borkified.

You might completely remove the config for the printer and redo it.

New Yeah, I could do that...
I'm kind of playing around for now because I want to learn. If it gets ugly, I'll get out the Atomic Delete Button Of DoomTM. Until then, it's h4xx0rville!

New curious, what happens when you
cat /etc/passwd >>/dev/whatEverPortThePrinterIsOn if the file prints cleanly that eliminates the printer being horked.
who can build printcap and lp models by hand but hasnt touched nix printing for a very long time.
thanx,
bill

New Turns out it's something else entirely.
Whatever was done to this tiff, it was weird.

Gimp wouldn't print to the printer at all.
gThumb printed out a solid black sheet.
Eye of GNOME would print it out, but in a very strange manner. Kinda stretched horizontally, like the old wide print mode on dot matrix printers circa DOS era.

Finally got around it by converting to PDF, then printing that. The job stayed in the print queue after completing, and CUPS shot up to 90% CPU usage and stayed there until I deleted the job.
