New Subsequent market data...preloads vs. sales
OK, item #3, "Subsequent market data will show that these number hold for box preloads, but in-store sales figure and aftermarket purchases are low", is [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/22791.html|now validated]:
"More than 10 million customers worldwide have purchased either a Windows 98 retail upgrade or a new Windows 98 PC since the operating system was released on June 25." - Microsoft, 20th October 1998.
vs. [link|http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/Press/2001/Nov01/11-11XPComdexPR.asp|Windows XP Sales Reflect Overwhelming Consumer Excitement
]
more than 7 million copies of Windows XP have been sold in the two weeks since its global launch. The 7 million copies of Windows XP were sold by Microsoft to computer manufacturers for use on new personal computers and through upgrades
Note that that's a comparison of consumer sales, vs. OEM sales (sales to OEMs, not necessarially purchased by consumers). And last I checked, 7 < 10.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New Checking
And last I checked, 7 < 10.

Ah, but that's not in the Microsoft universe. :=)

New Re: Checking
Stated another way:

And last I checked, 7 < 10.

But only for rational values of 7 and 10.

(Resistance is not futile...)
New Timeframes different.
I think The Register analysis is likely right, but you can't say MS is wrong by looking at your two quotes.

10 M in roughly 17 weeks for 98 versus 7 M in 2 weeks for XP.

I don't put any stock in MS's numbers - it's not worth the trouble IMHO.

Cheers,
Scott.
New In that two weeks since release . . .
. . Microsoft is counting all the OEM sales previous to the actual release date. I had clients already running XP weeks before the actual release. It would be much more realistic to call it 6 weeks, not 2.
