Because a grid of data is what tables are for.

Assuming you meant they're trying to get rid of tables as a layout manager, I completely agree that they didn't replace it with anything. There are so many things you just can't do easily: resize a "column" to the width of its content; make all "columns" the same height; align the top of one region to the bottom of an adjacent region; etc.
