New Oh for a career as a DBA

thanx,
bill
My Dreams aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be
New Heh heh heh! Had me laughing.
If I was drinking soda at the time, I'd shoot it out my nose after reading that one.

DBAs make at least 80,000USD a year if they are certified or have 3 years DBA experience. I guess they have to get that experience at a low paying job first? Reminds me of the last firm I worked for, they promoted a PC Technician to a DBA position for less pay than a developer. He hardly knew how to make a SQL query.

New Yeah, well, but then that isn't really a database they're...
...talking about. Shtuff like
Experience:
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Typing, Data Entry, ACT Database
Should be a clue, no? This isn't *really* a DBA they're looking for -- it's a secretary/typist/clerk/whatever!

I mean, hey, the main requirement seems to be:
...type a minimum of 60 wpm or 10,000 kph.
Fortunately, "kph" probably means "keystrokes per hour" or something, not "kilometres per hour" as the abbreviation usually means... :-)

And ACT, IIRC, is a CRM tool / glorified multi-user-PIM, not an RDBMS.

New if I could type that fast I would be a programmer :)
My Dreams aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be
New You don't need to type fast to be a programmer
it helps, but to be a programmer you have to think fast, and code smart. If you code fast, you could end up writing sloppy code that causes more problems than it fixes.

Think twice, code once. That is my motto.

New You can do better out West
Here's a senior DBA [link|http://www.dice.com/DandL/c/cxmacnb.34368.html|position] for twice the pay. You need +5 years Oracle experience, however, to be eligible for the $50k salary.

New Or Not...
Jacksonville, FL is actually a pretty cheap place to live, relative to Bay Area.

I would take the FL job, because you might be able to afford an Apt. and then beg for your food and transportation.

With the Bay Area job, $50K a year still has you living in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere. Selling your blood for groceries and begging for a BART pass.

Also, even in the winter, Florida is still cheaper to heat than the Bay Area. In the summer, well, in FL you're gonna sweat anyway, even if you have A/C.

I could probably get you a Java Programmer job in Greenville, TX for $30K a year... Provided you move yourself. You could afford a used double-wide from the Greensheet and still have enough money for groceries and an occasional blockbuster rental (just don't be late with the return). You're still gonna hafta sweat, tho'.
