Welcome to IWETHEY!

New MIT says Microsoft is IP thief.
Well, MIT and Electronics For Imaging Inc. (the exclusive licensee) have filed a lawsuit against 94 companies including Microsoft, IBM, and Polaroid because they
illegally used their patented image editing software.
...
EFI won control of the patent in 1990 and has licensed it to 16 other companies, including Apple Computer (news/quote) Corp. and Xerox Corp. The software design firm shares the revenue with MIT.

New Universities assuming more aggressive IP stance
There's also a recent Salon article on this topic. University of California's also taking a more "license for money" stance to patents. Covered [link|http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/01/04/1333205&mode=nested|at Slashdot] and [link|http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2002/01/04/university_open_source/index.html|Salon]. The current UC IP licensing director, Bill Hoskins, says "Whoever released the code for the Internet probably didn't understand what they were doing".

<sigh>...where'd I leave my cluestick....

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New On this one, I have to back Microsoft
Of course, Microsoft's hands aren't clean on patents, either. Alas, what will probably happen is that they'll work out some sort of software deal or cross-licensing agreement.
"Beware of bugs in the above code; I have only proved it correct, not tried it."
-- Donald Knuth
New Actually, MIT is after quick cash . .
. . retroactively - this patent is within a year of expiration.

New Not really
I am, so far, significantly before anything that could be called quick cash.

New Doesn't exactly have to be "quick", either...
Les'see, say I've been wanting some since I turned 18 (actually, it's definitely longer than that, but just to draw the line *somewhere*... Legally coming of age should be significant enough...) Anyway, I'll be 38 in a couple of months, so I've been waiting for just about twenty years. Some slow-fuse twenty-two-year cash, perhaps... Please? Somebody? Anybody? Bueller?
