Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Nautilus bites.
I wonder just what the developers think they're on, but if you're not in Gnome, then Nautilus is a bad resident.

Using Ubuntu, I've installed WindowMaker. It's supported, but it doesn't give me any Gnome stuff. This is okay. It's what I expected and what I wanted. Unfortunately, Nautilus is not a simple file manager: oh no, it has clever stuff like a Desktop and Virtual directories for network shares and USB devices and CD/DVD media. Apparantly, it even has a CD-burner. (I saw apparantly because it's a bit of a maze to use it.)

It also treats WindowMaker as a second-class citizen. Launch the bloody thing and it takes over the Desktop, spewing it's own icons all over the place. And then... and then... you can't get rid of it! An older version which did this had a cunningly named Exit option or something which made it truly go away. This one doesn't! Oh, it support --no-desktop to stop the first craziness, but close the window it opens and it's still really running. Where I don't know and WindowMaker doesn't know how to summon it up again. I can run a second one, but then Nautilus gets side-tracked with navel-gazing.

I'm not impressed.

Wade.

New Not fond of it either.
I want to know why, when I run the damned thing over a network connection, every icon is identical - a document.

It's crap.

New Oh come on, everything's a thing, don't you know?
You shouldn't have to worry your pretty little head over what kind of thing. Leave that to the smart computer guys to figure out. All you need to know is that there is a thing somewhere that you can open.

New Thats a 3rd
Nautilus sucks. Gnome is quickly approaching major suckage.

Don't use it anymore. Too heavy..and too hard to configure away the weight. XFCE is light, configurable...and only have to add the weight of the major desktop libraries to run programs that depend on them.

New I hates the Nautilusss.
Especially since they did the whole stupid spatial window-per-folder thing. I want the tree view back. And yes, I know I can go find some obscure, buried setting in gconf, but for something that fundamental doncha think they could have put a checkbox in the main preferences? As bloated and slow as Nautilus is, I really can't be arsed to track down a setting for something I hate to use, just to make it barely usable.

New They have the Tree view back.
Its an option now to use "browse mode" always.

gtweakui-nautilus from the "gtweakui" package

that'll do.

New OMFG ... they stole a package name from Windows
Is there any clearer sign that something's going the wrong direction than having to copy the idea of TweakUI from Windows-land?

New Come on... LESS is MORE.
That's the whole point of GNOME right now.

Take away the users options, put "in SANE" defaults on and then laugh as advanced users try to use the crap.

I've given up on GNOME and KDE for easy config for me.

Just for the record: I want my basic, medium, power and advanced options back. Like it was in GNOME 1.4.

But, I want all the advancements that GNOME2.V+ give me.

No, Peter, don't respond to this, we already agree to disagree on this.

New WindowMaker is looking really sweet right now.
I don't know where Gnome is going either, but I'm not that happy with the ride. It seems so very Microsoft-ish - "we know how you want to use your PC". Ugh. No, you don't, actually.

I wonder if it's time to make a WindowMaker-centric desktop... I wonder if GNUstep is anything like ready for that yet.
