Turning off the @#%@%@ CD autoplay in Windows 2K
HOW.
Please.
The Help file is oh-so-helpful: "hold down the shift key while putting a CD in the drive".
Uh, ok... that's assuming that I *ever* want it to autoplay.
*grumble*

*snicker*
Actually, let me fully describe the problem:
I'm running Win2K in VMWare under SuSE 7.2... Now, when I want to use GRip to rip some audio CDs, Win2K fires up the benighted CD player when it detects the CD insertion.

Well, I guess that means VMWare works pretty good
Wait, you're going to have to hack the registry on an instance installed in a virtual machine to keep it from controlling the CD drive through the ... my head hurts.

Works pretty well too... ;-)
Especially now that I turned on DMA on my hard drive. I don't know why the distro installation programs never manage to find that one...

You could disconnect the CD-ROM from VMWare.
I guess that would depend on how often you would need it in Win2K.

Unfortunately, it looks like I have to throw the baby out with the bath water and disable autorun setup programs for the CD drive too. :-P

Try this ...
[link|http://windows2000.about.com/library/tips/bltip436.htm|Disable Audio CD Autoplay] Though when I found the final dialog, my 'Set Default' button was disabled. Mabye you can just remove the entry.

Windows Annoyances
I've seen the O'Reilly series, though haven't had much cause to look at it lately. Does it address your issues?
...though the thought of buying a book to turn off crap you don't want in an OS you don't need (or vice versa) is...positively Gatesian.
