Changing resolution on non-X console?
Not sure what I'm asking for here, but anyway...
For our *NIX shell scripting class, the students use Linux in run-level 3 (text only). One of our students has a hard time reading the text on the screen (17 inch. Dell multisync monitor).
Now. worse comes to worse, we can boot him into X and rig something that way, but is there anyway we can resize the text or change the monitor mode so it's useable for him?
When I was asked, I poked around and mumbled something about 'stty' and 'rdev' but I don't think these are the answer.
I suspect there's a way to change text modes on the monitor but I'm not sure what it would be or where to start looking.
Thoughts?

Use the FrameBuffer
fbset has modes that are very good for low vison people. I am giving you the default set of modes that come with Debian Sarge... lower resolutions are available, but I leave that as a task for the informee mode "640x480-60"\nmode "640x480-72"\nmode "640x480-75"\nmode "640x480-90"\nmode "640x480-100"\nmode "768x576-75"\nmode "800x600-48-lace"\nmode "800x600-56"\nmode "800x600-60"\nmode "800x600-70"\nmode "800x600-72"\nmode "800x600-75"\nmode "800x600-90"\nmode "800x600-100"\nmode "1024x768-43-lace"\nmode "1024x768-60"\nmode "1024x768-70"\nmode "1024x768-72"\nmode "1024x768-75"\nmode "1024x768-90"\nmode "1024x768-100"\nmode "1152x864-43-lace"\nmode "1152x864-47-lace"\nmode "1152x864-60"\nmode "1152x864-70"\nmode "1152x864-75"\nmode "1152x864-80"\nmode "1280x960-75-8"\nmode "1280x960-75"\nmode "1280x960-75-32"\nmode "1280x1024-43-lace"\nmode "1280x1024-47-lace"\nmode "1280x1024-60"\nmode "1280x1024-70"\nmode "1280x1024-74"\nmode "1280x1024-75"\nmode "1600x1200-60"\nmode "1600x1200-66"\nmode "1600x1200-76"

Re: Use the FrameBuffer
Thanks. I thought it was something like that, but this isn't my area of expertise.
Would you mind if I e-mail a link to this discussion to the person who originally asked me about this?

Nope. Go right ahead and...
e-mail away.
There are also the "traditional" modes that the video card supports too. These are harder to force but can be used just as well.
80 Characters Wide and 25 lines tall, is the default text based console for most. But you can get to 40 Characters wide and 12 lines tall on most current Video Cards... yes even the $700 nVidia cards.
Matrox seems to be the best supported for Linux in this regard, but now that S3 is back in the Video card realm, they have some nice offerings.

Even better.
I believe there is a howto somewhere floating around on what to do.
I'll look for it... though I am busy right now.

Not to worry
You do what you need to do and I'll poke around for the HOWTO, now that I know something like it exists.
You've helped me quite a bit already, now and in the past.

"Students made it long ago," said Rincewind. "Handy way in and out after lights out." "Ah," said Twoflower, "I *understand*. There is this work here. Might need some tweaking.

But the straight VESA framebuffer driver should work too.
