Weird Mepis thingy
I'm using a Dell GX150 as a test system - and once booted with the LiveCD, I'm pegged @ 100% CPU utilization. 24% RAM used, 0% swap used, so that's not the problem, I think. Right clicking the mouse takes a minute to show the menu on the desktop; double clicking the installer takes forever, and I don't like to think about how long the installer would actually take to run. I'm dropping back to kernel 2.4 to see if that makes a difference, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Thane

Can you see what's doing it?
Get out of X and check the running processes?

Re: Can you see what's doing it?
Considering the amount of time that it takes to even spawn a menu, I gave it about 15 minutes to spawn a command prompt with nothing. Booted it up on a newer machine, and it works fine. Looked at the tool configuration, and it looks like it's 100% kernel time, as the bar is 100% red all the time.

Drop to a shell
Ctrl-Alt-F1 from X should drop you to the console, from there you can use ps to see what's running.

GX150?
Izzat the P3 or P4 variant?
The P4 one is a big pile of poo that should be dropped from a high building onto a hard floor.

P3/900 methinks.
I was handed it as a test machine, haven't screwed around with it much. Dell's support page responds that this is what was in it when it was sent out; see no reason to argue with it.

May very well be the issue.
Discovered that somebody had added an extra NIC identical to the other - will play in a a bit when things aren't going pear shaped. :D
