Considering the amount of time that it takes to even spawn a menu, I gave it about 15 minutes to spawn a command prompt with nothing. Booted it up on a newer machine, and it works fine. Looked at the tool configuration, and it looks like it's 100% kernel time, as the bar is 100% red all the time.

Drop to a shell

Ctrl-Alt-F1 from X should drop you to the console, from there you can use ps to see what's running.
