Sometimes "tolerance" is just a word for not dealing with things.

New Rorschak?
I dunno what you think all those excrescenses might 'mean'. Looks to me as if the combination of a techno-fascination with equipment + a surfeit of Hippity Hoppity doggerel - can drive certain unstable minds into renunciation of the remaining 99.999% of the universe. Especially minds running on empty.

Joining a nice Authoritarian org which promise the perfect peace of perfect homogenization (by whatever force is needed) ? Why that eventuality.. sounds like the epitome of the phrase

no brainer.

Let's kill him; maybe tie him to a pickup truck and drag him through a camp meeting - while everyone waves a flag of some kind. Happy then?

New Squishy left in denial
[link|http://salon.com/news/feature/2001/12/11/walker/index_np.html|It's not our fault, honest]

Excerpt:

If the conservatives are right, and the forces of relativism, liberalism and "subversive, winking, countercultural hipness" that dominate American society are to blame for Walker's apostasy, then the hills should be positively crawling with fellow travelers.

I say:

They are, and you know it. The rest confine themselves to ill-considered protest marches, however. The only difference is in the extremes to which an individual will let his warped emotions carry him.

I'm not absolving young John of all responsibility for his own stupidity. But the fact is he was brought up in a environment that discouraged critical reasoning. We've got way too many stupid youngsters in this country. I blame the school system first. But I also blame the parents. And I blame the stupid kids themselves. Anyone on this list could have prevented this, or at least tried. It's a long string of failures that lead to such an outcome.

Nonjudgementalism is a cop out. It's also hypocritical, as practised in Berkeley and environs. Ever see these people get all live-and-let-live and who-are-we-to-say about anything conservatives say or do? When they threw out critical reasoning, they completely threw out the reasoning, but selectively kept the criticalness.

New Sometimes Marlowe is just another word for....
everything bad that has ever happened or will ever happen is completly and totally the fault of the stinking lefty liberals.

Sheesh. And you complain about the lack of critical thinking?
When I visit the aquarium, the same thought keeps running through my mind;
Leemmmooonnn, Buuttteerrr, MMMmmmmmm good!
New Ooooh, looks like I hit a nerve.
`Nuff said.

New If ONLY the Left was crawling around in the hills...
...you might have a point.

Living here in the PacNW where we have ultra-conservative freaks crawling through the hills with large-caliber weapons, gunning for any "nigger, kike, or sand nigger" that comes across their imagined "white paradise" for the "god-fearing conservatives" that this country was made for.

Each side has it's loony element. The conservatives have the NRA Neo-nazi extremist wackos, the liberals have tree-hugging ecofreaks. If you close your mind to the possibility of one side being wrong, you're no better than the Taliban.

New Ummm: a mind is a terrible thing

New Re: Bit trail of an American Taliban
One thing everyone can agree on is that when he left for Yemen, he was an adult and could/should be able to make up his own mind.

I would also tend to agree that the U.S. educational system seems to be intent on filling its pupils' minds with mush and making sure they don't even have the information they could use to make informed decisions. The statistics of kids who don't know squat about (fill in the historical period or person) are shocking. Want to bet about how many high school - hell, even college - graduates know there was a Buchanan (not Pat) who was president? Or, no, let's not even go that far. I wonder how many students can get through grade school and college without even a mention of James Buchanan.

New Objection on base assumption.
Ours is a youth-worship culture; the 'older' spend much of waking hours as Conservatives of.. tryin to recapture that which they pissed away in search of the BigEZ -- and tryin to go back to that unfinished state. The mercantile model of life values compliance and groupthink much more than originality (except in sales). How else could you sell. all. this. stuff. with the same ol same ol slogans? (And.. all on credit! forever.)

Confusing this malevolent-noise besotted child with any concept of adult homo-sap? is to confuse a tadpole with a Bullfrog - though that part of BS does provide a weak link. Never mind that T. Fundamentalists have the same IQ as Falwell Fundamentalists and the same Hate-Q as well. (We're allus fryin folks what can't tell the difference between god and a scrod.)

So.. let's kill him. That's what's out there a festerin and a rubbin hands.. in expectation of - what's the Best Way to get Prime Time residuals for the public spectacle? Let's have those reel Close-Ups of his grimaces as that transistorized red-hot poker (with the Screamin' Eagle) on the handle is -

Administerin Murican Ju-Ju-Justfotainment (HDTV style)
Hell, let's get his parents too - they must have done Something wrong and It's WarTime\ufffd - so we can skip that bleedin' heart librul 'thinkin' n'stuff. For the Duration.
{sigh}

Fusion power might transform the Middle East from an important strategic asset for the Western world into a bunch of strangers killing themselves over disagreements about sand and magic.
