Linux distro question: Ubuntu or Debian Sarge?
I've got a server to replace. The current one is running RH6.2 on a Pentium 100. It's happily serving DNS, HTTP, SMTP to the internet and DNS, Squid, DHCP and SMB to the inside, but the version of Samba is getting a bit long in the tooth (XP co-operation is low) and I've like a newer webmail client that is in that version of Courier. And, it needs to support USB in the Very Very Near Future (i.e. this week, if possible!)
I have a replacement server (Pentium 266*) and it had Debian Woody on it too long ago so I want to re-install it. I don't need X on the console, but it does need to be able to see a new Epson inkjet printer down the USB. Would people recommend Ubuntu or Debian Sarge? Net install is not a problem.
Wade.
* The box is a Compaq Deskpro, for those who want to know. It has 32Mb of RAM and I have a 40Gb drive to add to it's existing much smaller drive.

Change...
The /etc/apt/sources.list to say sarge vs. stable/woody.
Don't use the term "testing".
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and see what happens.
If all goes well or there is too much to do, with libc stuff blocking nearly everything then you need to go onto the next step.
apt-get -u dist-upgrade
That should theoretically bring you right up to date.
Since Sarge is "supposed to be" release @ the end of May... (end of June likely or later) this might just be you path of best options.
The one bad thing about Ubuntu is "releases every 6 months" whether or not it needs it. Plus, even though you can do a custom on Ubuntu to get a server, why for would you do that when Ubuntu is based on more Graphical releases.
Thoughts is all.

Thanks and Further questions.
1. Will that do a kernel upgrade?
2. Is there a straightforward way of catching all the .deb files apt-get would download and putting them on a second PC so that when I repeat the apt-get thing on the second PC it already has all the files to hand?

No probs and Answers.
1. No, it will keep the original. But simply rectify it by installing one. Also, I'd suggest you turn to GRUB as your Bootloader. It just plain is nice to have the ability to fix your own screw-ups at boot time, as compared to LILO.
2. There is a way. Fer the Life of me... can't quite pull it out of "Slow Media" as fast as I want.
There are three, I'd use one of them. There are reason to use each. But you need to make sure that the proxy/cache is setup *BEFORE* you do your upgrade.
apt-cacher apt-proxy approx
Hopefully there are versions in Woody, as it is late, and being tired.

The other, less lovely way
Burn the contents of /var/cache/apt/archives to a DVD, do the base install on the other machine over the net, and then copy the DVD contents to /var/cache/apt/archives on the target box.
I did this once, and it worked.

That looks like what I think I'm looking for.
Just to get it straight, if I copy /var/cache/apt/archives from the upgraded machine to the un-upgraded machine, then apt-get update will only download new stuff that's not already in there?

Yep, you have it straight.

That'll work, too. Just fine.
I thought maybe you were looking for a way to do that automagically.
But, anywho. That'll work just fine.

Automagically would be great...
But I think using one to cache the .debs for upgrading from Woody to Sarge may be pushing things, given their various statuses. Of the three you list, only apt-proxy is in Woody; but it's not in Sarge :-/. The others are only in Sid.
I'll do it Peter's way. That, at least, is similar to how you do it with FreeBSD's ports collection, which I am already familiar with. :-)
