Wrong. Pretty much the opposite in fact.
The US translation of "liberal" in Europe is "libertarian".
Think The Economist. Think free as in "free market". Think of liberty from opressive government regulation.

Your opinion does not count.
You live in the People's Republic of California. I, OTOH, am firmly in the heart of Jesusland where we know a pinko when we see one.

To clarify
You think that a US libertarian (small government, maximal personal freedom etc) is the political equivalent of the Liberal Democrat party in the UK?
Not so. The Lib Dems are substantially to the left of Labour, these days.

I don't know the specifics of UK political parties
All that I know is that the usage of "liberal" both historically and through much of Europe today does not bear much resemblance to what most in the USA think of it as.
Cheers, Ben

True for Canada as well
Liberal in Canada means something quite different than it does in the US.

OK
Wasn't being snarky, was just trying to work out what you meant.
The LDs are very social, progressive, inclusive and other ives and isms. They actually have a penny on income tax in their manifesto. They're not at all in favour of small government or personal freedom at any cost.

What "most in the USA think of it"????
We, as in "Santa Monica"???? You think that's representative? Hmmm, was the Santa Monica vote in 2004 also representative of "most in the USA"?
Ya know, I can see why linc gets put off by your arrogance from time to time.
"Liberal" to the majority in the US not living in the more progressive Left coast means, "virtually Socialist." And for most in the USA, a Socialist is indistinguishable from a Communist. And most in the USA have not the foggiest of notions what either of those words mean.
HTH.

It's worse than that - today,
My Gramma LIVES..

Commies == 'Democrats' | Blue States (bit of a color oxymoron there) Muricans == Repos | Red States (aprops of the Trotskyites at PNAC)
