Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I am whole once more....
Doing freelance work for a former client on the AS/400 - actual programming! I can't believe how good it feels.

There is no documentation for thier system outside of a few handwritten procedural notes taken down by non-techs. It is so much FUN figuring out how this system works and modifying it to thier specs! *GRIN* How could I ever have let my career drift so far from this? How could I have let myself get into admin, then IT mgt.? (Oh yeah, money... It wasn't worth it)

Heh - the last guy they had made mods to thier production system - they were nonplussed when I made my own batch subsystem and created my own test databases (sort of explains why he's gone, doesn't it!). They're also surprised at how fast thier 'requests' are getting done (though I'm surprised too - I thought I was rustier than I am, evidently).

The best part of this is, that when this job runs out, I'll have current experience programming - It will make getting programming jobs MUCH easier in the future!

*smile*

Thought I'd post some good news here for a change...

New Well, that's good news!
Since your are turning those changes around quicker than expected, spend even more time on your testing. Also, the less fun part, the documentaion. Leave a solid record of your work.

New Heck yeah! That's only common sense...
...even if it does frustrate the client - I like to be part of the solution, not the problem! *grin*

New Lot's of good news.
Some of us never get a chance to find out what we really enjoy about work. I'm glad you got back to what really makes work fun for you.

Hey, we're starting to hear some good reports here among the gloom. Maybe it's the start of a trend, or could we hope, even a movement!

:-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New And that's what it is -
the IWETHEY anti-massacree movement...

You can get anything you want... At the IWETHEY restaurant....

OK.

I'll stop now.

New Heh.. AS400
Kinda figured that yer tastes would run to the demented dimensions of RPG, WBT ... and little black boxes which sit in the corner replacing roomfuls of Snazzy Toasters. Got yer new pocket protector?

In case management wants to sharpen up their medullas, so's to appreciate the magnificence of your manipulations -

(Me.. I thought - why not start at the top? Fergit BASIC n' Visual Smalltalk: learn AS machine language . But then.. I thought, why not become a Certified Vincent Rehabilitation Expert. Instead.)

New Oh, it's even worse than that -
I am one of the vanishing few that groks the RPG program cycle - and both uses and appreciates it!

New OT: Re "replacing the toasters"
Has anyone else seen the IBM commercial about the missing servers? Frantic PHB leads the police into the server room to show them that all the servers have been stolen. PFY walks through eating lunch and says, "No, I moved everything to that. [points to a single rack against the back wall] Should save us a bunch of money. I sent an email." [Voice-over] "IBM e-series running Linux. Blah blah slogan blah."

Man I love that commercial.
