Use P2P for legitimate purposes!
New Prob. not worth it, but frightfully convenient.
But since you already have web hosting space and stuff... possibly not much use at all. Being able to sync my Safari bookmarks with the Mac account is handy when away from home, and I like being able to go to iPhoto and click a single 'make a web page out of that would you? there's a good chap' button.

And of course the beret-wearing cachet of a mac.com address :)
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.
New I use it quite a bit
- [link|http://homepage.mac.com/tsinclair/|My homepage], where I host notes and material for my classes, is there.
- The storage (iDisk) is integrated into OS X, so updating the site is as easy as saving a file locally.
- I publish [link|http://ical.mac.com/WebObjects/iCal.woa/wa/default?u=tsinclair&n=My32School32Calendar.ics|my school calendar,] there.
- I sync my bookmarks, address book and calendars between my two Macs and my iPod with .Mac
- I get free and/or discounted software

and. of course, the most important reason for me to use .Mac:

It's where I can display the [link|http://homepage.mac.com/tsinclair/PhotoAlbum3.html|obligatory photos of my cats.]

So, you might want to poke around the [link|http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Welcome|.Mac home page ], if you haven't already and make up your own mind.

New So you have to be a Mac owner then?
Or does it support other OS?

I know Windows has a "proggy or two" to work with it... but really is it good?

I am looking at getting a mac-mini or even a (Dual)G5 etc... or recently I've been needing/wanting a Laptop.

Based on everything I have seen recently with "ONE THOUSAND YEARS OF PAIN" for Linux support in laptops *STILL*, I've been considering a PowerBook or iBook.

I dunno, maybe I just need and 800 MHz laptop that has a few keys that dunnah work proper. Of course $DATE_AVAILABLE is some what unknown.

We shall see.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Mepis is really good with my ThinkPad T41.
I've discussed some of the goods and bads [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=184560|here]. and in subsequent posts. Sound I got working by turning off the Mute button. I got the wireless 802.11b working by using ProMepis.

I haven't tried your Java update fix yet. Too many irons in the fire...

The Powerbook is a nice machine though. We've got a 667 MHz G4 TiBook with 1 GB of RAM. It's fine for web and Office stuff.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Gonna set up my Power Mac as dual-boot
when Tiger comes out. Till then, it's still my PPC Linux test box.

Mixed results so far.

New It's mainly for Mac owners

but the online storage (iDisk) is just a WebDAV share so you can easily mount it on a Windows box.

They have a good Web-based mail client that's cross-platform.

However, the 'iTools' (iLife, iSync, AddressBook, etc.) have the .Mac integration that makes it really worthwhile.

As I say, not for everyone, but darn convenient.

Specifically I like the email that can be accessed using a real client *or* a web interface (very handy when you're on the road)

I like the ability to use isync to backup my personal information (keychains, address book, preferences, etc) to a nice safe network available volume.

I like the idisk/webpage/photo sharing stuff.

If you have a properly managed machine on a static ip address that gets properly backed up then most of what .mac does you don't need. But if you don't, its really quite handy.
