New Mac Families + 2
Just got back from finally setting up my brother and sister with their Xmas Macs.

I spent Saturday at my brother's teaching him, his wife and 2 boys. I gave them a PowerMac G4 system upgraded to 1.0 GHz, 576 MB RAM, 120 GB drive, USB 2.0, CD-RW/DVD-ROM and a better video card. They have internet access but haven't used email in quite some time due to the deluge of SPAM - my brother was quite impressed with how Mail sorted it out for him. Hopefully that will make it useable for him again. Both boys had a lot of fun with the games. I gave them the 2 [link|http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/mac/potter/|Harry] [link|http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/mac/chamber/|Potter] games, [link|http://www.pangeasoft.net/nano2/|Nanosaur II] and [link|http://www.pangeasoft.net/enigmo/info.html|Enigmo]. My brother said the oldest was getting along pretty far in Enigmo.

I spent Sunday at my sister's teaching her and her husband. I gave them a PowerMac G3 system upgraded to 1.1 GHz, 576 MB RAM, 120 GB drive, USB 2.0, CD-RW and a better video card. They liked how quickly the photos downloaded(they were used to serial, I've set them up with a USB 2.0 card reader) as well as how easy it was to back up the photoes(they'd lost most of their digital photos in a Win2K mishap). They're interested in adding a Laser Printer, Scanner and DVD burning abilities to help out in Eric's business, they want to make a photo slide show of some of Eric's work that they can show on a standard DVD player. I also gave them my box copy of Quicken 2004(I discovered my iMac G5 came bundled with it). They plan to use that for home finances and for Eric's business.

New How was it?
Were they new to computers or just new to Mac? Did you (and they) get the feeling they would have figured it out on their own eventually, or would they have been lost without your help?

The friend I set up with a Mac, I told her before she bought it that I'd heard Macs were better for newbies but hadn't acutally used one lately. She went with the Mac since neither of us wanted me to be on call for her. Since then (last Christmas) she hasn't called me for help, so I assume she's getting what she needs to do what she wants.

New New to Mac
They dual booted Windows and OS/2 on the systems I gave them a few years back. I think they would have figured it out eventually, I talked to my brother after I got back home and he commented that the Mac was a lot easier to use. I also gave them [link|http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/macxmmpanther/|The Missing Manual], which they've been reading over.

It takes a few hours to drive to Corpus Christi from Houston. I spent about 4 hours on training with each basically pointing out the differences from what they were used to, basic usage of iTunes and iPhotos, and how to use MacMame. I do think my brother would have had problems setting up his internet connection, though it's because his provider has issues. He's using ATT Global(used to be IBM's internet access and they supported OS/2). They have a proprietary dialer that worked fine under my brother's account but none of the others. I was able to use PPP, but for some reason they don't send the DNS settings via PPP so I had to track them down and manually enter them.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]
New Damn
No more personal attacks, it'll get back to the family.
New doubtful
They seldom use the internet. I was talking with my brother last night around the time of the post and he was busy fixing dinner with his kids. My sister doesn't have internet access from the house.
