New I imagine the crackers are already at work...

I found this snippet interesting:

Originally music executives were less worried about artists not getting paid than about the potential for Xbox to become a new Napster, since it has a large hard drive and online capabilities. But in a statement prepared for this article Microsoft said that though music could be stored on the hard drive, it could not be copied on "CD's, MP3's or any other devices."

I'm willing to bet that part of the cracker community bent on toasting copy protection schemes are working hard on giving the lie to that statement. Ever since they arrested Skylarov, I'm sure there is a large community of people out to ensure the <koff koff> "content providers" never ever get a free ride.

New MAME already works on XBox..
Link was on /. over the weekend.

New but not on the consumer version of the XBOX
From the [link|http://www.otakunozoku.com/xbox/index.html|MAME on XBOX] site,
only registered XBox developers actually have an XBox that can run the software

The photos show an XBOX PC tower, which I gather is the developer version of the XBOX.

New But from there it's just a matter of time.
As far as I know, and I'm not speaking from internal knowledge, the X-Box basically *IS* a standard PC, with a specialized OS. A little work, a little reverse engineering by somebody in a country without draconian IP laws, and BAM! a revolution.

New It would require a certain moral mortitude.
For instance, I would rather not give Microsoft any more money than I have to. Even just to get the hardware.

Surely they're losing money on each Xbox they sell. So, if you buy one razor, but never any replacement blades...

(Umm, I think I've already posted this comment before. Oh well.)

New But it still gives them "Market Share"
just like the forced Windows preloads. If everybody bought a PC and replaced Windows with something else, Microsoft would still have a "50% market share" of the operating systems, even though their OS is not being used(ie: 10 PCs w/Windows, 10 replacement OSes = 10/20 for Microsoft).

Same thing happens if a bunch of people buy XBOXs and don't use them as game systems - Microsoft can still use those sales to influence third party game makers with XBOX's "larger market share". This could end up with more "exclusive to XBOX" games, just like we have lots of exclusive to Windows software.

New Good Point
They may not make money directly, but it's still fodder for future advertising/intimidation campaigns. And the money one spends on an Xbox is money that won't be spent on a PS2 or GameCube or whatever.

Heck, buy a Dreamcast, they're only $50 in the US now. (Still $199 in Aus last I checked, go figure.)
