New not current, chemicals
That was my argument to begin with, how could it learn without negative input. If the input was artificially applied you are just programming a biologic computer.

New That makes it's own connections
And yes, nerve cells produce current chemically. Sensory impulses are still electrical. The rat-brain computer essentially learned to fly over time.

"When we first hooked them up, the plane 'crashed' all the time," Dr Thomas DeMarse, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Florida, said. "But over time, the neural network slowly adapts as the brain learns to control the pitch and roll of the aircraft. After a while, it produces a nice straight and level trajectory."

Imric's Tips for Living
  • Paranoia Is a Survival Trait
  • Pessimists are never disappointed - but sometimes, if they are very lucky, they can be pleasantly surprised...
  • Even though everyone is out to get you, it doesn't matter unless you let them win.

Nothing is as simple as it seems in the beginning,
As hopeless as it seems in the middle,
Or as finished as it seems in the end.

New now I read it again it still doesnt make sense
how would the plane crashing be any different from a pitch, a yaw or a level flight to a petrie dish full of cells? So why would it "learn" to fly?

New Negative result is 'crashing'
Positive, level flight.

Think learning to walk (on a simpler scale) walking is a positive result, negative is falling.

Or -

Crashing 'hurts'.

New nope, if they learned by themselves
crashing would be the same as flying level why would they care or recognise the difference?

New Why do kids care
if they walk or crawl?

The brain doesn't feel 'pain' after all. It just accepts input and provides output.

Just like the complex of nerve cells they put together for this experiment...

New Get a gun if going to Kennesaw.
Having one is [link|http://www.packing.org/news/article.jsp/2319|required]. Go visit [link|http://ngeorgia.com/people/thegeneral.html|The General] while you're there, if you've got the time.

Best of luck with the search!

Cheers,
Scott.
New I just heard about that...
Looks like Kennesaw uses [link|http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=Militia|definition number 3]. A bit excessive, perhaps... *grin*
