stop and think for a moment
a saucer full of mice brain cells on a 60 electrode grid flying an F22 simulator.
Now why in world would those cells giva shit whether they crash or fly straight?
Think about it. I want you to learn to walk blind on a busy street worth of traffic, you are going to be able to learn by getting hurt, its called trial and error. What error correcton can you give a group of cells? Now cellular computing can be done but AI? Dont think so.

Now if they teach it to fly as you suggested by running currents in different paterns but that is PROGRAMMING not AI as the cells did not LEARN to fly the programmers gave instructions no different than a C++ on an Intel program.

They DID learn to do it, though.
And... Define 'pain'. Isn't it just a trickle of current going to the brain that signifies a 'negative' event?

now I read it again it still doesnt make sense
how would the plane crashing be any different from a pitch, a yaw or a level flight to a petrie dish full of cells? So why would it "learn" to fly?

Negative result is 'crashing'
Positive, level flight.
Think learning to walk (on a simpler scale) walking is a positive result, negative is falling.

Why do kids care
if they walk or crawl?

When they did this in silicon years ago . .
. . they set up a random mesh of logic connections. When they got a wrong answer they used an electrical charge to burn out the connections that made that decision. They finally ended up with a logic network that gave the right answers, but had no idea how it worked.
Of course a silicon system like that is many orders of magnitude more simplistic than a biological system that can actively build new connections.
