Welcome to IWETHEY!

New You have to look at
/dev/input/mice

That rounds up all the usb input mice/tablets.

Of course, you also realize Debian does not allow a "succeed" anyway when it comes to mice and keyboard with mice not found.

There is a stanza entry that you can use to work even it the mouse pointer fails... it escapes me right now. I use it for being able to have a headless machine with X and do XDMCP logins to a machine like that.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Yeah, I know it's possible
But like I said, I scratched my itch. I'll care again next time it breaks.

ALthough ...

It seems to me if there is no available option after invoking 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' that will yield a functioning box with a usb mouse ... that might be a bug. So was this my faulty assumption, or is this a reportable bug?

New You have to KNOW...
That you are using a USB mouse and that /dev/input/mice is you device for it.

It is not technically a bug. If you were to read the description on that particular page... it does mention some things.

Ironically, it is a matter of figuring out which is left from the list, eliminating Serial, PS/2, GPM-data, IBM-busmouse and Sun Mouse (kybd connected mouse):
  • /dev/psaux
  • /dev/ttyS0
  • /dev/ttyS1
  • /dev/ttyS2
  • /dev/ttyS3
  • /dev/input/mice
  • /dev/atibm
  • /dev/sunmouse
  • /dev/gpmdata
This leaves you with /dev/input/mice only. Of course we all *knew* that.

Unless I missed it, I don't think that they had Barbie in mind as one of the 4 horsemen.
