New Re: I notice the text sort of quivering..

I gotta say that this Connectx VPC is bloody good - it allows considerable flexibility & as said in another post, allowed me to install Mandrake 7.2 when I couldn't get that to install on 3 normal PCs I had built.

You can created a virtual floppydisk & attach it write to it & detach it, same with CD rom drives or *.iso images. Either work.

If the host is win32 & the virtual is another win32 (95, 98, Me, NT, W2M) you can add drag-n-drop as well as shared folder support.

It took me a while to try out all the possibilities with the network: As well as assigning a unique fixed ip addr, the VPC will alternatively allow the virtual OS to request an ip addr using DHCP. This is better suited to workstation implementations rather than server implementations where a fixed ip addr is needed.

At one point I accidentally assigned same ip to both host & virtual os & got the usual duplicate ip error msg.

Cheers

Doug

New This cannot be.
At least to the unwashed, er this one - it seems an almost incomprehensible degree of emulation, all having to treat the hdwre as if it owned it all! And do this all flawlessly, despite the inevitably coming M$ patches and Fixpacks as (no doubt still?) shall attempt to sabotage this little call and that one.

Smacks of the talking dog skit: it isn't done well, but that it's done at all..!

Don't doubt your report.. just trying to envision someone running a humongous graphics program under RH running on W2K day after day and keeping: all that data! It just.. sounds.. creepy! like watching a guy on a high-wire pushing a wheelbarrow full of puppies in a windstorm. Y'know?

Ah well.. maybe W2K IS better as claimed (!)

New Re: I hate to give anything to Redmond, but

Whilst I had some gripes at Win2000 - generally it has run well & handled the abuse I dish out ok.

It is a given for me that trying to run a workstation & server on the same box no matter what type of box, is prone to disaster. I bitch about my Win2000 servers but I do awful things to them. Left alone they seem stable.

I like win2000 even more now that I have Connectix VPC & Linux installed. Is a much better setup than a split disk dual boot. I can copy the Linux pre-sized disks to my USB backup disk (or any other). These disks as defined as ext3 to Linux but just a datafile to Win2000 - VPC does a damned good job of marrying them - it is fast.

This way I can save a VPC on r/w CD or some other medium & install a new VPC with a new Linux or just copy the other one & upgrade etc: - very very flexible.

VPC even has an option that allows it to undo all changes made to the hard diak in a session (it simply runs a copy I guess).

I had heard lots of good things about Connectix - now I have tried it they seem true. Also my 1st careere was as a VM specialist with IBM back in the 360 then 370 days so have had years of indepth experience with Virtual Machine maiframes. Was also a country specialist on IBMs VRM (on the early RT (Risc Technology)). So my praise for Connectix comes from someone is knows what good VMs can do & has worked with many variants.

Cheers Doug
