Where I get confused is
When you put the apostrophe at the end of a word. I am pretty good, (I think) about getting it in the right place NEAR the end, when needed, but I get confused about how it works when you add it at the end of the word.

Matter of taste.
"James's hat" vs "James' hat". I'd favour the former, although Americans tend to the latter.
"Jesus' hat" is always like that. He's special, dontcha know?
If you're talking about the possessive of a plural, it's simpler - put the apostrophe at the end.
"The fans' cheers were loud."
"The girls' bosoms were pleasing to the eye"
There. Hope that clears things up.

First of all I would say don'tcha rather than dontcha. (Because of the nestled don't in there.) But I'm not sure which of those is wrong.
However the possessive of a plural does not always work like you said. For instance, "The mice's burrowing noises bothered me."
The American rule is much simpler in this regard. If you have to add the s to make the possessive, put ' before the s. Otherwise add it after the s. That covers both fans' and mice's.

On "mice's" and related words, yes, good point.
The American rule is simpler, but IMNAAHO, produces uglier words.

Both of you helped clear up the confusion! Thanks! I wasn't good in grammar because they jumped me over basic grammar to honors English. I was so mad, because I wanted to be a writer, so I've had to more or less learn it on my own, plus a college course or two I took.

The most usable book on the subject . .
. . that I've encountered was given to me when I was in Jr. High (Middle School now) by a union guy who had two. English for Printers from the ITU (International Typographical Union) is completely no nonsense and designed to look thins up as quickly as possible. My copy is c1945 so it's probably been updated by now.

Thanks for the info
I have a habit of not using it sometimes. I am trying really hard to break that habit. Sometimes I type it in and the key does not work and I do not notice it.
Another problem I have, is that I do not know which key to use. Is it "'" or "`"?
I also use "its" instead of "it's" and vica versa, got any rules on that?

As to ['] VS ["]
(Though I and many are rilly sloppy with following that rule - here, anyway ;-)
the ['] is generally used to denote a quote within a quote.. ie
My sister overheard someone at work say, "Gawd.. is ALL this 'Microsoft innovation' stuff nothing but pure marketing BS?"
"HTH", he said.
