New Another Q re Linux booting ...

Can anyone tell me the Linux proceedure (or command) for restoring the Windows MBR if I install LiLo over it.

Just want to be prepared for one more experiment.

Cheers Doug

(PS I know how to use fdisk /mbr - but that means having to boot Win Me or 98 *if* it will boot which so far it fails to do once I play with these disks)

Cheers

New Re: Also, the other side of this Q

Can anyone advise tha command that will install LiLo if I have done an install that runs off a boot diskette & I then want to change this to an automatic boot (that will include the Windows partition as a boot selection in the Linux startup screen)

Cheers

New If it boots up from your HDD...
... with all drive mappings correct et al, it's a fairly simple process.

1. Make sure the kernel you're booting off the diskette is also on your HDD.

2. Check /etc/lilo.con for boot=/dev/hda and that everything else is correct.

3. Run "lilo".

New Re: I have created a /boot partition

and the floppy. Will check the file you mention. I did a bit of this about 2 years ago & managed to get it working but as always, can't remember the details. Thanks for the pointers.

New Two ways.
1. You can do "lilo -U", which will uninstall LILO and reinstate the original boot MBR, *if* you installed LILO on the MBR in the first place.

2. You can boot off a Windows 98 boot floppy or similar and issue "FDISK /MBR".

3. Boot off a Windows 2000 CD, go to the Recovery Console, and issue "FIXBOOT".
