All told (hardware, TiVo subscription, DVD writer) I've spent a good deal less than the equivalent. I've got the TV, weather, browser, and news feed stuff up and going (most of which was just an 'apt-get install'). While it is more labor intensive to get going, the results are much more satisfying. And I tease my co-worker about that. :-) Honestly, I believe that most of his cost is that he was going out of his way to make the package as quiet as possible.
