New Legal Music Services for Windows 98
iTunes and Napster 2.0 apparently require Windows 2000 or XP to work. I have a relative I am trying to get off of Kazaa and going legit for MP3 or music files. His daughter is the one getting the files off of Kazaa and somehow got a few viruses and trojans as well. So I cleaned all the stuff off of Windows 98 using AVG Free 6.0, The Cleaner, and Spybot. Then I deleted Kazaa because it gave an error trying to uninstall it.

I went to install iTunes and Napster 2.0, but they refused to install. It forced me to try [link|http://www.mp3.com/|http://www.mp3.com/] which reported it was down for a while, and then [link|http://www.buymusic.com/|http://www.buymusic.com/] won't work with Netscape or Mozilla, forcing us to use IE 6.0 to get to it, it also requires Media Player 9.0 to download MP3s, ugh!

What legal music sharing apps exist for Windows 98 users? One that have you pay to download each song. Can he pay by check and not use credit cards?

System is a Gateway Pentium II 300Mhz system with 64M of RAM, and 8G hard drive. Might be able to run XP Home or XP Pro if I can upgrade the RAM to at least 128M and he can buy the upgrade version of XP. Unless a web service can do what he wants.

New Small nit
MP3.com is down, but only because its new parent corp is trying to reinvent it as a site just like Apple's "99 cents a song". That's too bad, because you used to be able to get tons of unknown band tunes for free as a way to get to know them. Groups I never knew existed (or would have bought their music) were introduced to me through an intensely musically inclined friend.

New Thanks
I didn't know why it was down. I thought maybe the RIAA hit them because some Artists still on contract were releasing songs on MP3.com and they quickly got taken off the service.

99 cents a song is still better than not having yet another source to download from. Yet I do agree that it was a good way to learn about new groups and get their songs for free. No such thing as free music anymore, or if there is, I cannot find it except for P2P File Sharing apps that are having users of said apps being hit hard by the RIAA for sharing MP3s.

New And I hope
that they KEEP the artists that distribute for free, available for free.

Think of what a great tool that would be for thier advertising... Being able to say 'free and premium music' or some such...
