Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Agreed.
Greg: Norm's an idiot, we know that. It doesn't need restating. I'm frankly surprised by the childish nature of this stunt.

Norm: If you want help, ask for it; you know what you have to include (you've been told enough times, but if it's still not sunk in, read [link|http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html|this]. In fact, read it anyway. That goes for all you other punks out there, too.)

A stream-of-consciousness diary about one of your fucked up computers is not going to elicit help or enlighten anyone.

New Right now I don't need help
the hard drive died, end of story for now. I'll bookmark that page and read it when I get the time.

My mistake for writing a diary of the steps I took to try and get my brother on Linux. I followed the Howto, and the only thing I forgot was to install WINE as root. WINE worked, the Diablo II install was working, until the hard drive decided to die and click annoyingly. Don't know why, but I have pathetic luck with hardware. RMAed the drive, will try again when the replacement comes in.

System at home I tried to install Linux on, the motherboard went bad and wouldn't boot anything, not even a floppy. Another spare system either the CD-ROM or IDE controller went bad and gave me Media Errors on a Linux install. Seems to run Windows fine if I keep hitting retry on install.

If I had the money for another system I'd buy it and have a system to run Linux on. But I am broke, and living check to check. I only have one good system, and there is only room for one OS on the hard drive.

New Re: Right now I don't need help
I've often suspected that drives need a burn-in period of light activity to seat the head bearings under real-world conditions. All metal bearings have an initial adjustment period - so for example if you drive your new car too hard in the first 1000 miles or so, you'll shorten its life by half.

The first thing you did was install 10 operating systems - that means a LOT of head motion in the early life of the drive. Also, how you mount the drive determines if work against gravity is going on. The tolerances are so tiny that even the slightest unnecessary stress should be avoided. Third - are you sure the ancient OS/2 DASD interface didn't overstress the drive by doing something stupid like fucking up the interleave?

Next time, install Windows and live with it for a month, then start tinkering.

New OS/2 DASD interface
Trust me, it didn't. The worst that might happen if he's using one from about 97 or so would be a failure to partition due to not recognising the size of the drive properly.

In fact, OS/2 on HPFS is probably one of the easiest systems on drive hardware out there.
