New Children's Movies on DVD
I haven't bought much, just "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" and "Citty Citty Bang Bang" on DVDs from Half.com for my 4 year old son and any of his cousins or friends that come over.

Can anyone suggest any other children's DVDs that I might buy for them? My brother already got some Powerpuff Girls and SpongeBob DVDs, and I found Batman The Movie (1960's Batman) for $5USD at a bargain bin at Wal*Mart.

So what movies are good ones, classics, ones that teach them, are entertaining. I've tried to think of some, but I just can't place any. Can anyone suggest any? Thanks.
New Those are some good ones.
Newer ones...either of the first 2 Spy Kids.

My son likes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the movie)

Stuart Little is good

All the Disneys.

Wizard of Oz.

To name a few

Well, to start with, I have to question whether we aren't being premature in elevating the "Powerpuff Girls" to classic status. Secondly, I think you're putting the bar too low. You wanna stretch their little minds, not talk down to them. Try:
Wild Strawberries

The 400 Blows

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

The Third Man

Dr Strangelove

Rashomon

8 1/2

Last Year at Marienbad
--and don't worry about the subtitled selections: you just read 'em aloud, emoting as appropriate, for a profound Pop-to-Tyke bonding experience. When the kids try to wrap their comprehension around the postwar black market in Vienna, you can give 'em the historical context and explain why it was wrong for Orson Welles to deal in counterfeit antibiotics. I guarantee you'll be the talk of the daycare center.

cordially,

Perhaps you were thinking of our esteemed Admin - and his small Mozartean son? (though you'd have had to do some spelunking to have caught just a few hints of 'our' Duncan: surely one very Large handful for a mere adult to be trained-by) :-0

Remember all those wonderful theories: that with the Wealth of Nations, there would be all these opportunities for Everyman to Raise-his-sights? All those dead Trade-Unionists whose heaped dead burned bodies bought US the "40 hour work-week" - furthering that Goal?

OK so.. what we Gots was - Reality Tee Vee and neon lights in a Pee Cee case. And LOTS of Stuff. (Stil.. our Eloi are quite more expensively dressed, too.. if not as stylishly as the originals.) Ugly Pants: our style for the Ages.

You forgot, [link|http://207.136.67.23/film/Reviews/bicycle_thief.htm| The Bicycle Thief] (De Sica)
I can only say that this film can possibly change your value system forever and I will rate it the greatest film I have ever see to date. I implore you to view it at least once in your lifetime.
[link|http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ForbiddenGames-1007681/preview.php| Forbidden Games] - what War and children have to do with each other. (I remembered those distinctive names, Brigitte Fossey, Georges Poujouly forever, for some reason)

But Props for the others on your list. Wages of Fear would need an older child and Seventh Seal a one with deviant tendencies towards reading William James instead of watching James Dean.

{sigh} Don't even think.. about all the Disney pabulum and Terminator 5, the Trans-Gender Affair (or someone will Make It).

And at least we may hope - copies of all these shall survive, even a period of Vandals and a temperature of 451\ufffd F.

Only the most unusual kid will be able to appreciate drama. Kids respond to fantasy and idealism - so I'd show them something like "Ladyhawke" or or an adventure story, zillions come to mind.

Not sure about what little boys like, since I don't have any, buy my 4-year old daughter loves:

The Sound of Music
Music Man
Any Danny Kaye movie
etc.

in addition to all of the others already mentioned here.

Dan
New The Seven Samurai.
Instant classic. Saw it for the first time when I was 6 - and was hooked, enthralled, entrapped, etc.

Watched it every 3-4 years after that, and each time I watched it I figured out something new about the film, some subtle nuance that I'd overlooked the previous time.

Also, the works of Miyazaki Hayao are HIGHLY recommended:

[link|http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/kiki/|Kiki's Delivery Service]
[link|http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/sen/|Spirited Away]

He also made The Princess Mononoke, but that might be a little too bloody (decapitations, dismemberment) for some kids.

New They okay for a 4yro?
My niece is 3 and I wasn't sure Totoro would be okay for her. Maybe when she's 6...

From the same vein, Monkey is good. Little boys will particularly like the action, but be aware that it is really a Buddhist tale. I doubt they ever finished the series - IIRC there were 1001 tales of Tripitaka, Monkey and the others in the original story.

New Totoro is okay for a 3-4 year old child IMO.
Note, I'm not a child mental health therapist, but it's nonviolent, has big cuddly characters, is a FUN film, and has a subtext about dealing with illness in the family in a healthy way.

I'm curious, have you ever seen it?

A bit from the film:

Girls are waiting at the bus stop for their dad to come home, Mei (older daughter) has not yet seen Totoro (nature spirit that looks like a cross between an owl and a penguin with horomonal balance issues, about 8' tall, and cuddly as all heck, with lungs to beat a politician), Satsuki (younger daughter) has.

Dad missed the first bus, Satsuki gets tired and falls asleep on Mei's back. Mei (holding an umbrella and her sister) hears footsteps, sees bear feet, looks up, and there's Totoro waiting at the bus stop with them, complete with a lily pad umbrella.

He notices them, hands them a packet of seeds, and then they see lights off in the distance - and the Cheshire cat bus pulls up, he chirps at them (in the english version, Carl Macek blows into a microphone instead, ruining (IMO) the mood), gets on the bus, and rides off into the distance, while the girls stare in complete and total disbelief.

It's a fun film.

New That's a great film.
Fine for a young child, too.

New Yes, I've seen it.
That's why I commented. I hadn't seen the others you mentioned, except for Princess Mononoke.

Yah, Totoro is great. :-) And you've got Satsuki and Mei reversed; Satsuki is the older one. And you forgot the bit at the busstop when Satsuki hands Totoro the spare umbrella. So to test it, Totoro jumps to make all the leaves shake. :-)
