New Simple definition request
My boss wants the definition and differences between PPP and VPN. I tried to explain, but she only became more confused.

So, in simple, non-technical terms
What is PPP and VPN?
What is the difference between them?
New VPN can ride on top of ppp
Ponit to Point protocol allows 2 machines to act like there is a dedicated piece of copper line between them to pass signals. VPN Virtual Private Network is a tunnelling solution where 2 machines exchange encrpytion keys and pass ordinary traffic thru an encrypted tunnel. Someone watching the datastream going by could not determine what the traffic actually is. Hope that helps.
thanx,
bill

New Thanks, just what she was looking for.
New Re: Simple definition request
A direct PPP is a real, physical network connection with bare frames. A VPN uses someone else's physical network by "tunneling", wrapping packets inside packets.

Usually something like a dialup service is a mix of the two.

New PPP is a modem connection
VPN is a service runs over that connection.

PPPoE emulates a modem connection over Ethernet.
