one of Java's main tractions (and attractions) is that server code runs fine on various operating systems without modification.


So can smalltalk, python, and a dozen better languages. More's the point - the other languages also run client code on various systems without modification - something that Java just doesn't do well.

Anyhow, I'd rather they fix the design errors than spend a bunch of time telling me their shit is tasty.

New Sure they can.
I prefer Python, greatly.

But Companies Don't Use Them. As such, from a practical perspective, I'm glad Java is there.
