Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Anybody here from oklahoma city?
Are there any IWETHEYers who have lived at some point in their past, or currently live, in oklahoma city? I just got an email from the HR department setting up a face-to-face there in 2 weeks, and one of the things he asked me (this being a few days after the telephone tech screening/interview) was "had I checked out the town via the Internet yet?"

Looking for opinions and links please.

New Can get very hot in the summer. But you knew that. :-)
[link|http://www.okc.gov/|http://www.okc.gov/] might be a good place to start looking around. I haven't been there myself. I did drive through OK one summer in an unairconditioned car. An experience I won't soon forget!

Cheers,
Scott.
New near beer?
When I lived there the grocery store beer was 3.2% alcohol, we called it "near beer".

It was funny, because I was used to the "strong" stuff, and it didn't get me drunk. I had to go to the liquor store to buy it. We would have pool parties and my friends would be stone drunk and I wouldn't even be buzzed on the near beer.

I used to bring the "real beer" to the party and most people couldn't handle more than 2-3 cans.

Funny, when I moved back to Texas, someone introduced me to foreign ales which have even more alcohol, and I hardly drink a domestic beer anymore anyway.

The wife buys wine, I like Merlot and Cab. Sav.

I also like the Australian Shiraz, and it's cheaper. I need to make it a point to visit Australia before I die. I like their beer and wine, and the concept of vast beaches with few people appeals to me. The Opera House seems to be appealing, too.

I know where you were headed with that Box, but usually Steers and q----s is reserved specifically for someone who goes to University of Texas and is gender challenged.

New Officer and a Gentleman Quote
I think the original source was Louis Gosset Jr. as a drill sargent dressing down a David Keith. In that one, he was referring to Oklahoma. Now, an officer and a gentleman may have gotten it from somewhere, too.

However, a little Internet search on the phrase turned up a WHOLE bunch of Texas references. Some from a garage band in Austin. Austin is a hot spot for the gender challenged, so of course, being from Texas A&M (where gender challenged people are generally hazed until they quit school), I'm sure I heard it enough to refer to those "gender challenged" types from that little school in Austin, Texas.

Where BEVO is their mascot. Steers (BEVO) and q----s (on 6th steet).

New Sorry to say...
...it ain't ONLY used to refer to gay folk from Austin.

Having attended "that little school" in Austin for 4 years, I can say that I never once heard the "steers and queers" phrase used to refer to gay people attending UT. Heard it from outsiders talking about people IN Texas (the state in general), from Longhorns referring to people who attend the other "little school" in College Station (and, of course, vice versa), and from Texas referring to Oklahomans, as Bill stated.

But AFAIK, it's not solely (or even mainly) used to refer to gays in Austin.

Whoop!

With no intended offense to the gender preference challenged.

New Known lots of people from there
It's considered to be an oasis of sorts. Being a college town & capital, it's similar to Austin.
New Nice scenery
..but the landscape is bland. Didn't spend a lot of time there. Seemed like Texas minus the 'tude.

New With that comment I've got to add
Saw the show a few times.
When they took the Fourth Amendment, I was quiet because I didn't deal drugs.
When they took the Fifth Amendment, I was quiet because I was innocent.
When they took the Second Amendment, I was quiet because I didn't own a gun.
Now they've taken the First Amendment, and I can't say anything about it.
New ...is oh so pretty.

New Aunt and Uncle live there...
And I lived in Tulsa for two years.

It will be a refreshing break from Humid Houston.

Visit the Cowboy museum there. Even if you're not that interested in cowboy history, the player piano exhibit in the basement is worth the price of a ticket alone. They have the most awesome player piano collection I've seen. Player pianos were used as a kind of jukebox in saloons after they shot the piano player and were looking for another one.

Don't shoot me! I'm the piano player... Just kidding.

New More
Great family town. Lots of things for families to do. Lots of parks. It has what I would call "perfect" weather. Four seasons, without winter being too harsh. Summer is hot, but not nearly as humid as Houston/Austin area.

To the east (toward Tulsa) are rolling hills and beautiful scenery. To the west are the flat grassy plains of the Panhandle. There's a beautiful little resort area called Arbuckle/Turner Falls about two hours south of OKC.

You may remember it from the Texas news. It was where the Texas Democrats decided to hide until the legislative session was almost over, so the house did not have a quorum and the Republicans couldn't submit new legislation. At least they chose a nice (out of state) spot.

Coming from Texas, Oklahoma has an income tax, about 2% I think. I don't know if it is flat or graduated, because when I lived there, I didn't make much money.

You'll get a nice home about like Texas for about the same money. Prices may be somewhat higher after the recent tornados, because of the scarcity of building supplies and labor.

OKC is tornado alley. There is one neighborhood that has been hit twice in 5 years. Some homes have storm cellars. My aunt's house has a storm cellar.
Tornados tend to hit south and west of downtown, kind of like Dallas.

Norman, OK is the college town, south and east of downtown OKC. University of Oklahoma is there. Great college, good nursing and med programs.

Take some time out and visit the downtown bombing memorial building.

Finally, the unemployment and welfare compensation are quite generous there, so if you're laid off again, you're much better off than you would be staying in Texas.

New Cowboy Museum
I remember that place - but it's been over 30 years since my Parents took me there. :-)
New Re: Cowboy Museum
It's been about 25 for me. I think I was 12 or 13 when I went. But, it was really COOL!
New oklahoma city
I recall hearing that they practice a really aggressive form of architectural criticism there.
