Why do you need dozens of xterms?
Just use [link|http://www.gnu.org/directory/screen.html|screen]. I develop on a Linux box with the help of screen and I typically have at least 8 screens running, usually more.
I've started learning about the power of split screens and copying text between them. :-)

One more set of keys to learn
As opposed to flipping between sessions by using the existing window management keys. I've started learning about the power of split screens and copying text between them. Now you know one of the reasons I love emacs so much. Just like screen, but with text buffers. The buffers can be a shell, a directory listing, ftp session, mail, a .jar file, a MUD session, etc. :-) Regards,

Similar with one exception
Session persistance. \r\n\r\n I run screen for virtually all of my remote access sessions. If anything happens to the connection (or I simply want to hang up for a while), I disconnect but do not close the screen session. Later, screen -r reconnects, and I can resume where I was (in mid edit if necessary). Ask peter or greg how long my screen sessions can last.... ;-) \r\n\r\n I suspect you may be able to do something similar using emacsclient, but, well, that's about a score more set of keys to learn.... \r\n\r\n Speaking of which, an emacs user griping about learning keys is like a fish griping about water, isn't it? --\r\n

I've already learned the keys.
And they're the same for every buffer, for the most part. And for bash. And Mozilla. And every readline() program in existence. Speaking of which, an emacs user griping about learning keys is like a fish griping about water, isn't it? Similar number of keys (and fewer in many instances), function for function, as vi. Without the modality. I run screen for virtually all of my remote access sessions. Heh. I just never disconnect. ;-) Regards,

And I was considering how to go about setting up some screens within screen, probably by changing the top one's command key. I have to admit a certain fondness to heirarchical window-ness. And just to keep you guessing, I've started learning the emacs keys for bash mode, since I'm the only one at work who uses bash's vi bindings. Once I've learned them a bit more, I'll probably give emacs a better wack. Wade.

Don't like it.
Like seeing a LOT if possible across multiple monitors. Usually
have 6 tops and disk watchers going during deveopment in
my 2nd monitor.
Hey: Can't I put a 3rd and 4 monitor in?
For screen style usage I usually setup tabbed konsole sessions
and rename them.
Also, don't like screens key method (control ^A?) which is changeable
only to other control keys. Like to use ALT and SHIFT-Arrows.
Also, screen emulation sometime breaks programs that fine
in plain xterms.
What I DO like screen is for the detachable sessions and shadowing for
support.

Put like that, screen clearly doesn't address your preferences. A colleague of mine also likes konsole. He puts screen sessions inside konsole sessions...

Well, I have another one...
When I am watching network problems come and go to find the culprit, I sometimes have as many as 16 UTF-Xterms running in a readable but tiny font. They are usually running some kind of latentcy/ping/promisc mode proggys. Sometimes it is about seening the patterns that way to find intermittent problems.
I usually have a root window background that displays all logging from the logging server as well. So usually I can see those indicators as well.
Nice features about using X this way is you can switch to another workspace and do a reaction setup for combating things, when you see the problem copy the window to the other pager space and voila you are in business.
This to me is the sinlge MOST useful feature of *X* to me! Now, when are they going to get those implants so I don't have to type? Hmmm?
