New Went to listen to symphonic music
First time in ~10 year...
To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, To belong to the same species as Bethoven is enough to make the humblest beggar proud and to humble the greates king.

(as a side note, we spent the cost of 6 "CDs" for this. Gladly. Can music industry take a note, please?)

New ROI..
Long after those Cee Dees have suffered bit-rot, the permanent experience will Survive!

I still recall that Polish Orchestra (Cracow or 'Krakauer' auf D.) in Germany, playing like the Berlin Phil.. as if it were umm _?_ (In retrospect.. had someone told me what I was about to hear, I would have paid $500 for that experience, in uninflated USD du jour. Fortunately.. life doesn't work like That ;-)

Glad you got to see music made. Amazing, ain't it?

Ashton
New We do so regularly
For our own entertainment, and as part of our son's education. The nice thing about the symphony around here is that nose-bleed seats may be had fairly cheaply, with no attendant degradation of the sonic experience. If you really want to see the trombone slides move, bring binoculars. ;-)

We've seen [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=17479|Itzhak Perlman], the [link|/forums/render/content/show?contentid=67705|Canadian Brass], the Dave Brubeck Five (not "classical", per se, but certainly classic), the Rockettes Christmas Special, and numerous topical performances (baroque, Tchaikovsky, fairy tales, etc) put on by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. There's also a place near us ([link|http://www.palacenet.com/index.cfm?category=8|Meadowbrook Music Festival]) that has a program called "A Night Out With The Symphony" (or something similar), which consists of an open-air amphitheatre, a big hill, and lots of happy comfortable people with kids, blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets. My favorite performance there was the 1812 Overture - complete with (loud) cannons and (louder) timed fireworks.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New New York Philharmonic
The New York Philharmonic has a summer series of free outdoor concerts. Central Park in Manhattan, Van Cortland park in the Bronx, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, etc. as well as the Westchester Community College in Valhalla. Sadly, due to budget cuts, they cancelled their Westchester concert. Don't know about the others.
