I'm about to become a spam demon
We currently have a client for some database and call center activity.
He currently does some SERIOUS spamming, about 2 million messages a week. Claims opt in. God know how he conned that kind of opt in, but he wheels and deals, accumulating names from various ventures, so I accept (for the moment) that they are legit.
He currently uses a service that he does not like, and is looking to switch. Maybe to me.
So:
I need a solution that is capable of send 1 million messages in a 12 hour period. This includes hardware, software, and communication lines. It also will have to have a web based opt out system, as well as able to read returned and bounced messages to also flag them in a database to not resend. I expect to have to install at least 1 dedicated T1, and possibly more. I also may setup a few DSL lines, not sure yet.
Other than tell me to kill myself now, does anyone have any suggestions for a full package to do what I've described?

That's nice
I'd strongly recommend you not come 'round here looking for partners in crime.
...unless you'd like to advertise the IP and ISP of origin.

Well, I know *where* to send 'em, anyway...
Just route 'em all to postmaster@127.0.0.1 -- he'll make sure each gets to the intended recipient!

I'm going to recommend a friend
But only because he is a friend.
Because high volume email on commodity hardware is his business.
And because he is sure to ask some hard questions, and I trust him to be unhelpful if the situation warrants.
Try [link|mailto:nelson@crynwr.com|nelson@crynwr.com] who runs [link|http://www.crynwr.com|www.crynwr.com].

Re: I'm going to recommend a friend
Wow.
The original packet drivers. I used his token ring shim driver to pretend it was an ethernet card on Dos 10 years ago.
Actually, I think I've narrowed it down.
3 Linux boxen, Reiser FS, qmail. Co-loed at ISP.
Our ISP was the original Sanford Wallace ISP, and they are REAL careful. A hint of resending after someone told you not to and they yank your box. Having your entire ISP range of addresses black-holed does that to you.

Could I make a recommendation.
If you have never set up qmail before - or even if you have and wondered why it was such a chore - could I recommend [link|http://www.courier-mta.org/|Courier] instead. It was originally a qmail alternative (!), using maildir as it's native format and borrows qmail's .qmail files for end-user configuration. It's not the complete solution you requested, though, which is why I didn't suggest it earlier.

Saved by the greed
Actually, I have setup qmail. It's easy.
(said after I almost killed myself over it).
Doesn't matter. The client was not 100% honest about how much they would be willing to pay for the service, (what would you expect from people already spamming?) which killed the deal.
I may be scum, but at least I'm not cheap scum.

You have a slightly odd definition of "easy"
I found Qmail interesting and funky the first time. After I had to find and re-compile another, unrelated piece of software to do something Mr Bernstein has decided he won't patch qmail to do* The second time, it was just painful. Courier is much nicer to setup.

* Which is configurable relaying. Courier has a whole configuration file devoted to this.

That's just because ...
(Oh, wait. I just noticed that second line. Well, for the sake of this punch line let's pretend it's not there.)
You're just one of those wierdoes who gets excited at the though of installing new hardware.

Sorry, that's hard to believe.
2 million messages a week, all of them "opted in"? I can think of no more than a dozen organizations that might actually have several million opted in subscribers. Say weekly newsletters from the largest ISP's, mailings from sites like Yahoo or Amazon, certainly Microsoft proably has that kind of volume, but surely no more than a handful of other organizations.
In all seriousness, I would be interested in learning what kind of legitimate mailing he might be sending out.

Re: I'm about to become a spam demon
Well, I can't recommend them as I've never used them, but I do know that my wife audits a company here in Dallas called E2 Communications, and they offer such a service for mass mailings.
I think it's at [link|http://www.e2communications.com/|http://www.e2communications.com/].
