Gotta live somewhere...
and since renting is not an option, given the pets we have, it's time to buy. If it all falls apart in the future, then that sucks. But it's not like we're buying something we can't afford to make payments on...

True
But did you buy more than you would have, because you can afford it right now?
Are the people who are refinancing taking advantage of the opportunity to get cash back?
Whether or not they are, the fact is that many people are doing these things, and the aggregate effect of this is good short term and possibly scary long term.

We're actually paying less than I expected.
We basically got more house for less money than what I expected to pay for a smaller house. In other words, what is known as A Good Deal, as far as I can tell...

How are you getting on with the "upstaters"?
I thought they were very good folks.

Yeah, it's funny.
I mean, down south you hear about how rude the northerners are, but so far everyone around here has been really friendly. They do drive more aggressively, though. :)

As one who practically lives on . . .
. . The freeways of Los Angeles County, I have driven in the North East, and "aggressive" is not the term I would use. I know "aggressive", I do that, every day, and that's not what they do there.
I prefer to stay here where the drivers are relativeley sane.

You can't scratch...
...rust. \r\n\r\n Or more to the point, you don't care if you do. Cars with paint intact (and their owners' egos) stand no chance against the frigid north rustbuckets.

Scratching rust is one thing . .
. . but you still wouldn't drive like that here unless your ambition was to be a hood ornament for an 18 wheeler in your next life.

I just won't drive out west, then
because the northerners drive plenty aggressive for my tastes. :)
