New About to try some changes
Since I asked that first question, I disocvered that I wasn't running a font server, so the line in my XF86Config-4 pointing to unix:7100 wasn't finding anything. I installed xfstt and added a line pointing to unix:7101 (I wonder why it was different from expected) and now have much fonalishousness.

Now to try to sub-pixel and smoothing goodies.

New Re: About to try some changes
The really cool thing about this whole /etc/fonts thing is that you don't need to restart X to see your changes work - it happens on the fly.

I've got luscious fonts without any xfstt silliness. You should also realise that xfstt and friends are basically old news, as they patch the fact that there was once a time when XFree86 didn't do TrueType. The built in font system is what you want to use.

If you're using a font server, check that the config file at /etc/X11/fs/config references all the directories that have fonts in that you want to use.

New Done
xfstt is gone, I can select the bitstream faces, all is good with the world.

Except ...

I still can't get gnome-terminal to use the console (Type1) fonts. If anyone knows a way to make it do this, I'd love to hear it. In the meantime I'm using Eterm, which isn't perfect, but it'll do for now.
